This quilt was made to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the founding of Donvale Christian College. Mrs Anne Suk was one of the few women who held a place on the Board of the School in its early years. She was a member of one of the founding families. This is one of very few items to survive from the early years of the school. It was specifically created to celebrate the 25th anniversary.Machine pieced pale blue Quilt with navy and olive green borders and navy binding. School logo and swag of flowers have been machine pieced and appliqued on the quilt. The quilt has then been hand quilted with navy thread.On the back there is a label with "J.H.E. This quilt or wall hanging is entirely hand-made by noted Orbost district craftsperson, Elsa Williams (nee Elsa Beavis, b 27-5-1924, d 22-6-2007) who lived on a property at Wombat Creek near Orbost in the 1980s. Elsa had her own sheep, spun and dyed the wool, and crafted this quilt. For about 20 years, Elsa was a member of a weaving group started by Gwenda Bland at Lake Tyers. Elsa wove carpets for her own home at Wombat Creek. Gwenda Beavis was given this quilt by Elsa in 2007 and it was often displayed around the district, receiving many comments due to the quality of the workmanship and design. This quilt has been made from hand-spun and hand-dyed wool. The background is Tricot crochet squares, and the coloured decorations of Australian animals and plants have been embroidered onto the tricot squares. This items is significant because it shows excellent creativity and quality of workmanship. It also represents an era in Australia when hand-weaving, spinning, and dying wool became very popular as hand-crafts. The Otways Quilt is believed to have originated with the Perkins family, landholders in the Beech Forest area. Some of the names or initials on the quilt have been tentatively identified with other farmimg families in the same district.A rectangular quilt hand embroidered in white on 20 square panels, with the names or initlals of settlers in the Otway district, and surrounded with an edging of floral embroidery. The original small, pioneer cottage was built in the late 1840s to early1850s, by an unknown pioneer. It was located on part of a 30 Acre allotment that was originally part of Dendy’s Special Survey granted in 1841. The doors and window sashes, (made of red deal joinery timber), as well as the brass locks and fittings, are from the original cottage, and were imported from England. The fire-place bricks are from the original cottage, and are sun-dried, (not kiln fired), and are hand-made. Convict marks can be seen on two bricks. There is a small display of external cladding shingles from the original pioneer cottage. These shingles were hand-split, and most likely made from locally collected timber The nails included in this display were used to fasten the shingles on the original cottage, and are also hand-made. The cottage was occupied by William Box and family from 1865 until 1914 when it was sold to William Reitman who resided there until 1950. The enamel nameplate, “Colonial”, on the wall of the cottage, was the name chosen for the original pioneer cottage by Mr William Reitman, when he purchased the property in around 1915, for 1200 Pounds approximately. In 1974 Mr Lewis, a timber specialist, found the dilapidated building on property he had recently purchased in Jasper Rd and suggested it be reconstructed and relocated. Moorabbin Council agreed and the cottage was rebuilt just about 250 metres from its original site. The cost of the rebuild was met by 'Victoria's 150th Committee, plus a small grant from the City of Moorabbin, and Mr Laurie Lewis donated much of the timber for the reconstruction. The re-constructed cottage plan has followed faithfully the original dimensions, and plan of the original pioneer cottage, and as many original items from that cottage’s long occupation have been incorporated. The photographs in Album 1 record the progress of the reconstruction from February 1984 to the First Public Open Day November 18th 1984 and this Flag Raising Celebration in February 1985.These 3 photographs taken at the 'Reconstructed Box Cottage' on Sunday 24th February 1985 show the Presentation of the Australian Flag and the Victorian State Flag by Mr Geoff Connard MLC to CMHS President and Moorabbin City Council Cr. The quilt was purchased from the Wool Quilt exhibition held at the National Wool Museum in 1995. It was subsequently exhibited in the Expressions 2000: The Wool Quilt Prize exhibition in the 'Invited exhibitors' section of the show. (Jan Irvine wrote the catalogue essay for this exhibition.) The quilt is part of the "Running Stitch" Collection. This quilt is titled "Sure as Night follows Day" and was made by Jan Irvine from worn and recycled woollen blankets with wool batting. The quilt has been crazy pieced, air brush dyed and hand quilted. The quilt was exhibited in the Running Stitch Contemporary Wool Quilt Exhibition held at the National Wool Museum in 1995 and was purchased for $1800 from this exhibition. With permission, and in collaboration with Elder Aunty Cynthia Hardie, Reid reproduced original drawings by Yorta Yorta man Troy Firebrace using acrylic paint, hand embroidery and machine quilting, to acknowledge and celebrate the world's oldest continuous living cultures, those of the First Nations peoples in Australia. This work was acquired as the winner of the Golden Textures art quilt exhibition at Central Goldfields Art Gallery in Maryborough, Victoria in 2019. Held bi-annually at the Gallery, the Golden Textures Award Exhibition celebrates the region’s long connection with textile craft and textile manufacturing, especially in the early to mid-20th Century. From Rosemary Cameron - This quilt has been made in 100% wool to celebrate the diversity, durability and beauty of pure wool, especially the lightweight cool wools. The woollen patches were kindly donated by Mr. David Jones, managing Director of Fletcher Jones and Staff which were pre-cut samples of European Fabrics in various weights, textures and colours. I had the task of creating a design around the fabrics available, some of which I only had to sample. I chose to surround my design with dark shades to encompass at the top of the quilt, the lightness of the sky and the trees, in the middle the warmth of summer, the dryness of central Australia and at the bottom the rick tones of Opals, our mineral wealth and the internal heart of earth. To add excitement and texture to this design I chose 31 Australian Wildflowers including all the Australian Floral Emblems, some unusual wildflowers and favourite small wildflowers. Twice life size, these flowers have been made of silk wool and cotton, embroidered, painted and beaded by our creative and talented Hamilton Quilters, their results are fantastic! The brilliance and timeless quality of these Australian Wildflowers intensify and complement the colours of the Wool Quilt. The Quilt was hand pieced and hand quilted at quilting bees. It has a woollen batting, binding and backing which was a delight to work with and very easy to quilt. The flowers were assembled and attached in small working bees. To the fifty-two Hamilton Quilters who have worked on this quilt for six months thank you for you hard work and creativity especially Joan H. Lyons for her time, enthusiasm and knowledge when difficulties arose. Joan M. Lyons has worked with me on various stages of this Quilt, her help and support has been tremendous. A silk patchwork quilt in a hexagons pattern originally owned by the Denbigh family of ‘Wimba’. The Denbigh family is recorded as living at ‘Park Villa’ ‘near Kew’ in 1856. John Denbigh was at this stage the superintendent of the local Baptist school. By 1869 they are listed as residing in Cotham Road. John Sharp Denbigh’s death in 1875 resulted in the sale of Wimba. This is an important early English silk hexagons quilt with outstanding technical workmanship, and is well-provenanced.The quilt is constructed in the popular hexagon pattern of silk off-cuts of an earlier period. Hexagon patchwork quilts were typically constructed of individual hexagons, which were formed using paper or card templates. Where these are visible, it would indicate that writing paper was used to form the templates. The quilt is unlined and has a green silk border, added at a later date. Early 19th Century patchwork quilts tended to use cotton to create the hexagons, whereas silk became the preferred medium mid-century. The quilt has been dated to the middle decades of the 19th century due to the colour range, and the exclusion of black silk hexagons. Most of the silk used in the quilt has a sheen, however there is some use of velvet in one or two larger hexagons. This bolster sham is one of several linen and clothing items that were made and belonged to Mrs. Eliza Towns and donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. Eliza was born Eliza Gould in 1857 in South Melbourne (Emerald Hill) and in 1879 married Charles Towns. In the early 1880's they moved to Nhill in western Victoria and remained there for the rest of their married life. Charles was a jeweller and later became an accountant and for many years was involved with the Shire Council, the local show committee (A & P Society), the Hospital Committee and the Board of the local newspaper (the Nhill Free Press). They had three children and lived a life that would be regarded as comfortably "middle class". Eliza probably had a treadle sewing machine and would have made many of her own clothes and household linens - adding her own handmade embroidered or crocheted decorative trim. Most beds during the late 19th and early 20th century had a feather, hair or spring mattress covered by a blanket and topped with an under sheet, an upper sheet, several blankets and a bedspread. A flat bolster could be placed either under the pillows or on top of the pillows with a decorative sham. Washing pillows and quilts by hand would have been a very onerous task (involving heating water and handwashing in a tub or using a copper) and so it became the practise of many housewives to cover the pillows and bolsters with an outer slip (or sham) of washable material which could be easily removed and washed when needed. If the bolster was kept under the pillows it wouldn't need to be very decorative but many shams or slips that were "on show" were often highly decorated with embroidery, pintucks, ribbons or lace. This bolster sham is machine made and quite plain with the exception of some pintucking and eyelet lace on each end which suggests that it would mostly be hidden under the top pillows with just the decorative edges on display.This item is an example of the needlework skills of women in the early 20th century - combining machine stitching with hand embroidery to personalise and embellish a practical domestic object. Patch work quilts were made by women to decorate a cot or bed and to use left over material. They were backed to increase the warmth of the bedding. It was a leisurely occupation sometimes done in the home or with a group. These two quilts are of a decorative nature using scrap material and do not have a theme or particular pattern to them. These two quilts were made by women in the Kiewa Valley and were hand stitched.1. Hand-made cotton patchwork of varying colours and shapes of squares and rectangles. Backed with wadding. Across the top of the wall hanging are five hanging loops of dark green fabric (3.5 cm X 3.5 cm ). Scrap Quilts are quilts, usually pieced, that are made from a wide variety of fabrics, in various colors and designs. The quilt may be made from one Bloc design or different designs. Scrap Quilts can be carefully planned by color and design or improvisational in design.Hand stitched single bed patchwork quilt with a series of patchwork squares made from scrap materials, including clothing. Each square has a central point with narrow strips arranged in the form of a maze. Viewed at an angle and highlighted when photographed, a diamond pattern appears. "Autumn tones dominate the the quilt. most of the pieces appear to come from men's clothing (browns, tweeds, checks). Most squares include a red strip and some pink or lilac pieces from women's clothing or home furnishing fabrics. The backing is a heavier linen fabric (possibly curtain fabric) with predominant colours of green, red, pink and green in a floral design. At the top of the quilt several cotton tabs have been attached to allow the quilt to be hung. This dressing gown was made from a patchwork quilt begun around the 1880s or 1890s by the daughters of William and Polly Hodgens, owners of the Adelphi Hotel near Montague Station, South Melbourne. The quilt became a communal project, added to over many years by the Hodgens children, relatives, friends and guests. Together, they filled the colourful patchwork with images and figures from their everyday lives, giving us a unique glimpse into the world of early Melbourne.Crazy patchwork dressing gown made from a patchwork bedspread. Made from irregular pieces of silk, satin, velvet and brocades and embellished with embroidered and painted motifs. Fully lined with maroon silk. Neckline trimmed with thick silk cord. Given to "Running Stitch" c1995 by the Korrumburra Art GalleryLarge wagga made from fabric pieces which have been hand stitched together and lined with jute wheat bags. Fabric pieces are roughly rectangular and of various sizes. They are made from cut-down cotton knit garments (green and pink), a pink cotton fabric with floral print and various woollen garment pieces and their linings. Pieces are roughly over stitched together with various woollen threads. Created for and entered in the 2008 ‘Expressions: The Wool Quilt Prize’- “The quilts connect us to our past and to our future, by interpreting Australian themes and telling our stories.”- Judy Hooworth, Quilter and Judge of the Prize. Donated to the National Wool Museum after the conclusion of the exhibition.Eucalyptus dyed woolen blanket base with salvaged fabrics hand sewn to create a patchwork effect. The eucalyptus dye has been used to create different tones of brown and red throughout the design with further dyeing used to create leaf imprints on the fabrics. The Hamilton-Smith collection was donated by the children of Grace Mary Hamilton-Smith nee Ellwood (1911-2004) and John Hamilton-Smith (1909-1984) who settled in Wodonga in the 1940s. The Ellwood family had lived in north-east Victoria since the late 1800s. Grace’s mother, Rosina Ellwood nee Smale, was the first teacher at Baranduda in 1888, and a foundation member of the C.W.A. Rosina and her husband Mark retired to Wodonga in 1934. Grace and John married at St. David’s Church, Albury in 1941. John was a grazier, and actively involved in Agricultural Societies. The collection contains significant items which reflect the local history of Wodonga, including handmade needlework, books, photographs, a wedding dress, maps, and material relating to the world wars. This quilt sampler was made before 1900 by Rosina Ellwood. Crazy quilts were fashionable in the late Victorian era. The rise of the trend is attributed to the display of Japanese art and ceramics at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition (U.S.A.) that featured asymmetrical designs. Inspired, quilters began sewing pieces of fabric of different sizes and textures together into abstract, asymmetrical patterns. The craze spread from America around the world. Embroidery, ribbon and silk embellishments, and hand stitched applique birds and flowers were popular additions. One magazine estimated that a detailed crazy quilt could take over 1,500 hours to complete. Crazy quilts remained in fashion in metropolitan cities until about 1910, though the style endured for longer in rural areas. This item is unique, handmade and has a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. 'Earth Blanket' is a quilt made by Pamela Farmer of Shoreham, Victoria in 2000. It is made from a wool blanket with merino and alpaca felt. The techniques used to make it include: felting, applique, quilting, machine and hand embroidery and it has been dyed with eucalyptus leaves. This quilt was an entrant in "Expressions 2000: the wool quilt prize"; an acquisitive exhibition held by the National Wool Museum from 16 Sept. 2000 to 3 Dec. 2000 (extended until 2 Feb. 2001) for contemporary art quilts, with the first prize winning $2000. 'Earth Blanket' was selected as the winner of this exhibition and was purchased for $2000. It was catalogue entry no. 5.Quilt, woollen felt with appliqued, quilted, dyed and embroidered surface.
