A hand plane is a tool for shaping wood Hand planes are generally the combination of a cutting edge, such as a sharpened metal plate, attached to a firm body, that when moved over a wood surface, take up relatively uniform shavings, by nature of the body riding on the 'high spots' in the wood, and also by providing a relatively constant angle to the cutting edge, render the planed surface very smooth. A cutter which extends below the bottom surface, or sole, of the plane slices off shavings of wood. A gimlet is a hand tool for drilling small holes, mainly in wood, without splitting. A gimlet is always a small tool made of a piece of steel of a semi-cylindrical form, hollow on one side, having a cross handle at one end and a worm or screw at the other. A similar tool of larger size is called an auger. Used to clear scrub and undergrowth and to trim branches during seed collection. Manufactured by Martindale of Birmingham (England) - being Ralph Martindale and Company Limited. Established in England in 1874, the company is a manufacturer of hand tools, particularly machetes made from hot-rolled British steel. The three grooves on either side of the blade assist in removing the blade from sapwood. They extend to the tang of the blade to form a mechanical lock with the handle. The handles are made from German beech wood. The British Bolo style machete was the one most commonly used by the Australian Army during WW2. A canvas scabbard was issued with the machete. The scabbard has brass reinforcement of the throat and seven brass rivets holding the longitudinal closure. On the reverse of the scabbard is a webbing belt loop with an extension and loop with a brass press-stud to hold the machete handle They were acquired by the Forests Commission as Army surplus. This unusual set of pliers was made in Germany by Henry Boker (Heinrich Boker). Boker hand tools were being produced in the 18th century in Remscheid, Germany. Boker tools were known for good quality and value for money. George A. Fox & Co., of 250 Victoria Street North Melbourne, were agents for Boker tools in the 1950s. Museums Victoria has a Boker catalogue in its collection dated circa 1954.These pliers are significant as an example of hand tools used in the early 20th centry or earlier. This hack saw would have been used to cut metal. The blades were interchangeable according to the requirements of the job. The item could have been used on a farm or in industry. This item is retained as a good example of a tool commonly used in past times.This is a hack saw. It has a metal frame in a D shape with a metal blade on the straight side affixed with screws. The blade is finely serrated. Attached to the metal frame is a wooden handle. This hack saw also has an extra blade attached to the fixed blade with a piece of wire flex. Henry Disston (1819-1878) was born in England and later moved to America. He has been noted in a biography as a "Pioneer Industrialist Inventor". In 1840 he began making and selling his own saws in Philadelphia, USA, growing to become the world's largest saw manufacturer. Tools made by Henry Disston and his company have the reputation of being the finest tools money can buy.The saw sharpening vice and its shifting spanner are significant for their connection with Henry Distton & Sons, renowned for high quality hand saws and associated tools. In 1855 Henry Disston cast a crucible saw sharpening steel, the first person to ever do so in America. The hand tools are also important for their association with the early building industry. The metal surface has remnants of black paint. Inscription is cast into the jaws of the vice.
