Named for a charming village located in the Tuscan countryside northwest of Florence, Italy, Casalguidi embroidery is a distinctive three-dimensional form of needlework, which is worked in neutral colours and mimics sculpted marble. Traditional elements identify a piece of Casalguidi embroidery - the bastone (stick)—a heavily padded, three-dimensional composite of simple stitches referred to collectively as the Casalguidi stitch. The bastone can be worked in a straight or curved line, crisscrossed, or formed into a circle to create a definitive anchoring point for a design. Other characteristic Casalguidi stitches rise above the surface of the fabric to form naturalistic elements. all worked on a background of four-sided stitch. Assisi embroidery originated in Assisi, Umbria region in Italy, during the Renaissance. The techniques involved in Assisi embroiderywere practiced for many centuries; however, the modern form of Assisi embroidery as it is recognized today took its shape and form in Assisi in the 18th century. Early examples of Assisi embroidery often feature religious themes, pointing to its ecclesiastical beginnings. Convent nuns stitched church altar cloths, chasubles, vestments, and other religious items and materials with Assisi embroidery motifs. St. Clare of Assisi, an Italian nun who started the order of St. Clare, later became the patron saint of embroiderers. She was known for stitching altar cloths for churches in Assisi. Assisi embroidery went through several evolutionary stages, reflected in its changing motifs. In the 13th and 14th centuries, motifs included stylized birds and animals, scrollwork, and geometric designs. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Assisi work reflected Biblical and Renaissance-inspired motifs, with demons, angels, and mythological creatures.Assisi work - natural evenweave linen with double running in black round the design then filled in with blue cross stitch, leaving the design 'voided'.embroidery, assisi, 1940-60, italy, sachet, lions

Said to be made approx. 1875 by nuns. Aemilia Ars needlepoint lace (It. Punto in Aria di Bologna) is linked to the establishment in 1898 of the Aemilia Ars Society, in Bologna, Italy. The Foundation propagated the revival of the old crafts of the Emilia region, including that of embroidery and lace. Aemilia Ars lace is fairly strong and hard wearing. It is worked using a pattern that is placed over a card backing made of card. Holes are pricked into the pattern and card, and into these holes stitches are worked that support a laced framework. The framework is then used for the actual needlepoint lace, using a variety of stitches, mainly buttonhole and knot stitches, as well as picots. When this done the support stitches are removed, and so is the card backing. The designs were often taken from sixteenth and seventeenth century Italian examples, in line with the basic concepts of the Aemilia Ars society.Aemelia-Ars embroidery, made of lawn the decorative front oval has an inset of needlepoint lace surrounded by cutwork motifs.
