Dr Hector Rath Maclean was a well-respected local doctor and second-generation Williamstown doctor.

He was born in Williamstown and was the third son of Dr David Purdie Maclean, a local doctor (and coroner) since the 1850s.

Maclean attended Williamstown Grammar together with Charles Merritt, later Sir Charles. Dr. H.R .Maclean died at the family home in Parker Street on the 27th August 1934, aged 72.
A memorial to Dr Maclean was erected in front of the Senior Citizens building in Ferguson Street.

When Dr. Hector Rath Maclean died in August 1934 he was Williamstown's oldest and most honored medical practitioner. He died at his home in Parker Street Williamstown. He was 72 years old, and was born in Cecil Street Williamstown, on February 25, 1862. He studied medicine at Melbourne University and Edinburgh University. At the outbreak of the war, he volunteered for service with the 1st Australian General Hospital, and saw service at Egypt, from where he volunteered for service at Gallipoli as a member of the 5th and 7th Light Horse. Dr. Maclean was a founder of the local Williamstown hospital, to which he was senior physician and surgeon. He was also the port health officer and health officer to the city council.
