This photograph was taken in around 1920 at what was then the Hirst's farm (and later was owned by the Latter family). We believe that the child in the front of the photograph was likely Lana Hirst. Our notes indicate that the photographer was looking towards Charman Avenue and Caroline Crescent (at least, where they are today) from Emerald-Monbulk Road near the corner of Meadowview Lane. The other individuals in the photograph might be three of Lana's five older siblings (Leo, Jack, Dollie, Kath, Joe). Their parents were John Francis Hirst and Alice Maude.This photograph captures a historical element of Emerald's landscape, featuring a significant Emerald family on a farm that has since been subdivided and developed.This black and white photograph is a copy printed onto glossy photo paper, with the photograph uncentred between uneven white margins. A palm tree stands in the centre of the photograph, with four individuals directly in front of it. Three of the individuals are of similar heights, while one - likely a child - is significantly smaller. Over a fence in the background, the landscape dips into a valley before rising to a wooded hill on the horizon. Used by Ettore Alessandri who came to Australia in 1930's. He had land at Marlo and used this jack to clear the property of trees and stumps in 1940's and 1950's. The Trewhella Monkey jack was invented by the Trewhella brothers to help land clearance in Australia during the 1880's. Two jacks were made a 5 ton and a 10 ton. This item is a 10 ton model having two extension bars. The longer spear is used for larger tree work and the smaller spear for general work and small trees. Both models had two lifting claws at different heights. Th lower claw was useful for roots. The top claw was intended for going under loads and the bottom claw used for rolling timber. In 1929 the cost of the 10 ton model was thirteen pounds ten shillings.This item is an example of the machinery used by the early settlers to clear land. A 10 ton monkey jack. It has two extensions (spears) and two lifting claws. Small china pieces carrying scenic views of holiday destinations were a popular kind of souvenir during much of the 20th century. The pictures on the souvenirs ranged across natural beauty spots (beaches, waterfalls, rivers), civic buildings and monuments (town halls, war memorials), and indicators of local progress (commercial centres and occasionally even industrial sites). This historic site of Australia’s first open-air gallery is being redeveloped in 2023 for multi-housing fronting the Research Creek. In 1955, Ian and Joan Hassall moved to Eltham. They took a property on the corner of Zig Zag Road and Main Road, Eltham, north of the township (later known as 1215 Main Road). In July 1962, they opened their open-air gallery. Hassall’s Roadside Galley, “…cradled in the fold of hills to the north of Eltham” inspired by Ian’s own experience of exhibitions along the Embankment in London. The property included remnants of a stone quarry, paintings were hung on screens and removed at night. Various pedestals, that looked like giant mushrooms displayed sculpture, pottery, and jewellery. It had a small natural amphitheatre at the foot of a little sandstone cliff that fall away to the bed of a stream. To enter the gallery, a visitor crossed a small freestone bridge of oriental design, built by Hassall from local stone. The bridge spanned the stream flowing beneath great willow trees. Near the entrance wooden figures were displayed formed from pieces of local wood, said to speak to Ian Hassall’s sense of fun. Hassall’s Gallery was the first gallery of its kind in Australia. Ian became a full-time artist and when it first opened, he exhibited paintings he had made while touring the outback with writer and fellow Eltham resident Alan Marshall. These two b/w postcards by Rose Series show aspects of Orbost from c.1930s - 1950s. The bridge over the Snowy River appears to be the second bridge constructed in the 1920s and later modified following a flood with the section on the right. The view from Grand View Lookout is a classic view showing Orbost on the Snowy River in the background. "Following the 1919 amalgamation of suburban tramway trusts, an electrified tram service extended along Doncaster Road. Housing estates such as the 1919 Balwyn Park Estate, 1922 Hillcrest Estate and the Camberwell City Heights Estate, also 1922, quickly followed. These estates were built over by expansive suburban villas, set in fine gardens and along tree-lined streets. North Balwyn, largely constructed since 1933, was typified by even grander houses, many of them in the 'ocean liner' style and seen at their most distinctive in the Riverview Estate." Ten or more cattle pulling logs to a sawmill (possibly McLaren's sawmill in Belgrave). The land around the track is cleared and it is heavily treed in the background. There is dead timber lying around and the land looks dry. c.1920.
