This is a set of four photographs of Bell 47G-2 helicopters used in Royal Australian Survey Corps Field Operations. c1965. From 1957, helicopter transport of survey parties revolutionised transport in remote areas. The most common helicopter used by the Royal Australian Survey Corps at this time was the civilian Bell 47G-2 and the Sioux, the Australian Army’s equivalent. From 1964 an Aerodist MRC2 airborne Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM) system was extensively used for topographic surveys over long distances by trilateration to replace traverse requiring survey station intervisibility. In 1965 the command field survey unit personnel attached to the Army Survey Regiment’s Topographic Squadron were used mainly in support roles such as station clearing, tower operations, station monumenting, Aerodist computations, forward base operations, geodetic observations on the north-south traverse and logistic support for Remote teams. .1P is a photo of a civilian Bell 47G-2 helicopter Registration / Serial VH-UTB owned by Helicopter Utilities from Mascot, NSW c1965. In the background of this photograph is three personnel and vehicles at a field survey camp. The left-hand vehicle is a Willys Jeep with trailer and on the right is probably a Truck, 2 1/2 ton, 6x6, General Service GMC. The Bell 47G-2: VH-UTB was destroyed, and its pilot killed in tragic circumstances during a civilian survey operation on Cape York Peninsula in June 1966. .2P is a photo of a a civilian Bell 47G-2 helicopter Registration / Serial VH-IHB taken in Wyndham, WA. As the letters ‘TAA’ appear on the fuselage, the helicopter was charted from Trans Australian Airways. .3P is a photo of a Bell 47G-2: VH-UTC with survey camp in background. .4P is a photo of a Bell 47G-2 equipped with floats and unidentified personnel loading stores, possibly in Darwin. This object was donated from the Estate of Sergeant Gordon Dudley Buttriss (Service number A21702), a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) helicopter crewman who served with No.9 Squadron in 1966–7. Nicknamed “Stinky", he was awarded the George Medal for rescuing the trapped co-pilot and passengers of a burning RAAF Iroquois helicopter after it crashed on Nui Thi Vai Mountain on 18 October 1966. The helicopter was loaded with TNT. The George medal recognizes acts of extreme danger and gallantry not in the face of the enemy. Only three were awarded during the Vietnam War. This item was donated by Pte Stanley William Exon (3791206) who was a National Serviceman with the Royal Australian Army Service Corps. He served in Vietnam with 2 Transport Platoon RAASC from April 1968 to January 1969.A coloured photograph in a black/brown frame with with matt. The police flew the helicopter and landed in the Bulla Primary School ground. On that occasion a policeman spoke to the students and informed them about the role of the police helicopter and also outlined the physical aspects of the craft. In this photograph the children were lined up so that each one was able to see inside the helicopter. The children gained an understanding of the importance of the Police Rescue Helicopter in safety. This item was donated by Pte Edwin Stanley Tricker (3797633) who was a National Serviceman with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He served in Vietnam with 1 Australian Reinforcement Unit from May 1970 to June 1970 and Headquarters, 1st Australian Task Force from June 1970 to August 1971. Originally called CH-47A by the manufacturers Boeing and the US Army, these Chinook helicopters were similar to the cargo version except for some beefing up of the airframe to sustain the vibration of weapons when firing. There were also flown at a higher rotor RPM. This Chinook has the 40mm cannon and rocket pods which carried the 2.75 inch folding rockets. These were hard mounted and aimed by the attitude of the aircraft. Two of the 4 pintal mounted 40 calibre machine guns can be seen in the picture. It has been reported that one was also mounted on the ramp. Only four of these chinooks were built and sadly only one survived the war in Vietnam. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries.
