Edward George Dyson was born on 4 March 1865 at Morrison, near the Ballarat goldfields, the son of a miner. Dysons first collection of poetry, Rhymes from the Mines and Other Lines, was published in 1896 by Angus and Robertson. A second poetry collection Hello, Soldier!: Khaki Verse was published in 1919. Many of these verse were originally printed in the “Bulletin,” others in “Punch,” “The Leader” and Melbourne “Herald.” The book we hold at the RSL is the original edition and is No. 146 in our museum collection. Dyson contracted encephalitis in 1919 He died at his home in the Melbourne suburb of Elwood on 22 August 1931. Although a highly successful writer in his day, Dyson has since been overshadowed by contemporaries like Henry Lawson and A. B. Paterson , and also by the achievements of his brother Will Dyson , one of the leading political cartoonists of the early twentieth century.Hardback rectangular book. Austrian-born Yosl Bergner grew up in Warsaw, Poland and arrived in Melbourne in 1937 as a 17 year old refugee, fleeing European anti-Semitism. While he lived in Australia for just a decade, his impact was substantial. He became a leading figure in the Social Realist group of painters (which included Noel Counihan and Danila Vassilief) who were committed to depicting the experiences and struggles of the disenfranchised and marginalised. Their images of the urban poor, workers, refugees (and in Bergner’s case, Aboriginal people of inner-city Fitzroy) – were politically urgent and uncompromising, and remain a high point of mid-20th century Australian art. After departing Australia following the war, Bergner travelled in Paris, Montreal and New York, before settling in Israel in 1950. Here his work became more allegorical and colourful, while continuing to reflect his passion for justice and sense of mortality. He became known for book illustrations and theatre sets and in 1980 was awarded the Israel Prize, a state award regarded as the Israel’s highest cultural honour. His work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Tel Aviv Museum in 2000. He died in 2017, aged 96.

In 1988 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip travelled across Australia to take part in the bicentenary celebrations. In April Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrived in Geelong to open the Wool Week Display in the almost complete National Wool Centre. Crowds gathered to welcome the royal couple, wool shearing demonstrations took place outside the centre and “Spud” the sheepdog exhibited his herding talents. During their visit to the wool centre they were met by the chairman of the Geelong Regional Commission, Mr Colin Atkins and Mrs Monique Atkins. The Queen was presented with a rug woven by the museums 1910 gripper-type Axminster Jacquard carpet loom and the Duke was presented with a woollen jumper. In return the Queen presented three letters from the archives of the Windsor Castle to the museum. The couple left in the afternoon, charming the Geelong crowd.
