A mounted Heritage Troop was formed during the 1980s and 90s and performed a number of royal and vice-regal escorts as well as performing at local agricultural shows. Sir Zelman Cowan was Governor General of Australia, December 1977-July 1982. The 8/13 VMR Light Horse Heritage Troop was an extra curricular activity of the 8/13th VMR. Captain (later Major) Robert Morrison, a keen horseman, was the prime mover in raising the troop. Major General Kevin Cooke GOC 3rd Division authorised the establishment of the troop in February 1980. Captain (later Major) Robert Morrison was the troop leader and the driving force behind the concept seeing potential where others did not. The troop was made up mainly by serving members of 8/13 but did include some civilian members. Training and advice came from former light horsemen: Des Martin (8LH), Norm Whitehead (21LH), Bob Fyffe (20LH) and Fred Trickey (Riding Master RMC). In 1985, the portion of Puckapunyal Army Camp housing the Armoured School and Corps Museum underwent a major rebuild. The new facility named Hopkins Barracks was officially opened by HRH . Prince Charles on 31 October 1985. Prince Charles, who was accompanied by his wife HRH Princess Diana, is Colonel in Chief of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC). This style of trouser was worn by light horse soldiers. The jodhpurs were adapted from an ancient style of Indian trouser called the Churidar, which is tight around the calf and loose at the hips. It was adopted by British troops serving in India during the 18th century especially for sport. A British version was soon being produced by Savile Row tailors in London. The 8/13 VMR provided soldiers to Anzac Day marches and services in NE Victoria and Southern NSW.The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. ‘A’ Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles conducted a parade at Buna Barracks, Albury on Sunday 1 May 1988 to mark the 103rd Anniversary of the formation of the Victorian Mounted Rifles and the 40th Anniversary of the linking of the 8th (Indi), 13th (Gippsland) and 20th (Victorian Mounted Rifles) Light Horse Regiments to form the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. Colonel G K Howard, Director of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps was the Reviewing Officer. The Pipes and Drums of the 5th/6th Battalion Royal Victorian Regiment provided the music for the occasion. The 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles Museum at Buna Barracks Albury was officially opened by Colonel G F Howard, Director of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps, on 1 May 1988.
