The book contains a series of exercises which would have been used by artists and art teachers at the beginning of the 20th century. Mary Norman, the original owner of this book was both artist and teacher. Mary Norman worked in Warrnambool, and has left a significant amount of work of scenes from around the district. Crumps Dairy (Milk Pasteurising Depot) was located at 6 Benson Street, Surrey Hills on the corner of Weybridge Street until c1973. It was demolished after it had been badly vandalised. The business closed after cartons replaced glassperishables including milk, bread, meat and fruit and vegetables bottles for sale of milk. It was one of many small local facilities for processing and delivering milk that existed from the early 1920s. Eric William Walker Crump (1903-1981) headed the family business. Also involved were Kevin Eric Crump, Eric William Scanlan. NB/ Also held in this collection is a copy of a project by Chatham Primary School student, Susanne Pascoe, dated 1956 which includes photos of the dairy's operations. An oral history by Dave Croft, a driver for the dairy, who lived close by, is also relevant. The account also mentions 'Towt'. Canterbury Oliver Towt (1890-1962) was another dairyman whose premises was on the corner of Chatham and Mont Albert Roads.This is material evidence of business practice c1920s-1960s when accounts for goods received, especially perishables, were often hand-delivered on a weekly basis, with monies owed collected at the door. A paper account printed red on cream (discoloured) paper with the details of the date, account holder and address typed in and the amount owed hand-written in blue ink. The Ensign folding bellows camera was manufactured by Houghton-Butcher Ltd, this company was responsible for producing various cameras and accessories including the Ensign. Houghtons dates back to 1834 when George Houghton Joined Antoine Claudet as a glass seller. In 1839 they secured patent rights to the newly developed Daguerreotype process for photography. On Claudet's death in 1867 the firm became George Houghton and Son. The firm combined with W. Butcher in 1915 for manufacturing and the two merged in1926 a selling arm, Ensign was set up in 1930. On the night of September 24-25, 1940, enemy action completely destroyed Ensign's premises at 88/89 High Holborn. The business continued with variations of the name until 1961. R & J Beck company, a renowned British optical manufacturer founded in 1843.A black folding bellows camera in a leather case labeled H. E. Hill No 2 Yarra St Alphington. The camera expands to 22 centimetre length lens. The lens is labeled Beck Symmetrical Lens. There is small round yellow label in the camera - THE "ENSIGN' H Ltd. London. A white mark on a black circle above the lens combining a H and L may signify Houghton-Butcher Ltd. A personal notice in The Argus of 16 May 1934 records the death of Arthur Pritchard of 124 Park Hill [Parkhill] Road, Kew. His Will identifies his executors; his son and daughter. The daughter's name is given as Dorothy Gwendoline Pritchard who was presumably the owner of this equipment. Two pieces of equipment used to print / imprint a name and a postal address, probably on items of personal correspondence such as on the back of an envelope. The first is a wood and iron embosser which operates by pressing the metal level to emboss a document with the address "124 Park Hill Road / Kew E.4 / Victoria". The second is a copper stencil with the name of "D.G. Pritchard" who lived at 124 Park Hill [Parkhill] Road. 'After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view.'
