The introduction sets the scene for the book by presenting an overview of the history of histories of research on the languages of Australia , and identifying some of the major issues in Aboriginal linguistic historiography as well as directions for future investigations. Part 1 presents three detailed investigations of the history of work on particular languages and regions. The eight papers of Part 2 study and re-evaluate the contributions of particular individuals, most of who are somewhat marginal or have been marginalised in Aboriginal linguistics. Part 3 consists of six studies specific linguistic topics: sign language research, language revival, pidgins and creoles, fieldwork, Fr. Schmidt's work on personal pronouns, and the discovery that Australia was a multilingual continent. Overall, the volume presents two major challenges to Australianist orthodoxy. First, the papers challenge the typically anachronistic approaches to the history of Aboriginal linguistics, and reveal the need to examine previous research in the context of their times - and the advantages of doing so to contemporary understanding and language documentation. Second, the widespread presumption that the period 1910-1960 represented the 'dark ages' of Aboriginal linguistics, characterised by virtually no linguistic work, is refuted by a number of studies in the present volume."B&w photographs, maps -

Beechworth RSL Sub-BranchPrint - Print AND THE BAND PLAYED WALTZING MATIDA, TOP CAT CALLIGRAPHICS - 1998 / from the original by Vanessa Crisp. Eric Bogle - Larrikin Music, 1998 - the original by Vanesa Crisp honours Roderick 'George' McLennon - fixed forever in his time
... Through interviews with the writer, and an examination of the relevant historiography, this article presents a study of “the most potent ballad of the age”. ...Print was purchased because of the popularity of the song that was written by Eric Bogle in 1971 following his attendance at an ANZAC Parade in CanberraABSTRACT The anti-war song “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” has become a cultural icon in Australia, and elsewhere has been recorded over 130 times in 10 different languages. The song was written in 1971 by Eric Bogle, a Scottish immigrant to Australia, who has penned more than 250 powerful compositions, which, among other things, focus on the failure of history to impress upon youth the futility of war. Appropriately, Bogle was named Australian Humanist of the Year in 2001 for capturing “the ethos of humanism through his perceptive and individualistic song writing with its exposure of racism, bigotry, war mongering and injustice of all kinds”. Additionally, he was awarded the United Nations Peace Medal (1986), and was made Member of the Order of Australia (1987). This article asks why a song written by a Scot in Australia, fifty-six years after the Dardanelles campaign, feels as if it has “always existed. That it belongs to culture and country”. It questions what the appeal imbued within the lyrics of those five short verses might be and recounts the story behind the creation of what Pete Seeger referred to as “one of the world’s greatest songs”. Through interviews with the writer, and an examination of the relevant historiography, this article presents a study of “the most potent ballad of the age”. It also examines what Bogle meant when he said that it was a song that “came into its time” Wooden framed glass front print - The Band Played Waltzing MatildaPrint contain the lyrics of the song -
Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and VillageBook - Unconventional Biography, William Hazlitt Jr (Translator), The Life of Luther, 1872
... It is a minor but genuine entry in the corpus of a historian generally regarded as one of France's greatest and most influential 19th-century historians, a leading figure of Romantic historiography who re imagined the past by immersing his own personality in the telling, creating historical syntheses filled with dramatic power. ...The Life of Luther, written by himself, is not a conventional biography but a compilation of Martin Luther's own words letters, table-talk, and passages drawn from his polemical and dogmatic writings selected, translated into French, arranged in roughly chronological order, and lightly stitched together with narrative commentary by Jules Michelet. It is a biography composed of a series of translations; except for the earliest years, which Luther could not narrate himself, the translator rarely needed to speak in his own voice. The English subject edition is Michelet's French compilation that was first published in Paris in 1835 as Mémoires de Luther, écrits par lui-même and rendered into English by William Hazlitt (1811–1893). The work traces Luther from his peasant origins and monastic life through his ordination, his journey to Rome, his "temptations" and inner spiritual crises, his break with the papacy, his marriage to the escaped nun Katharina von Bora, and his role at the centre of the Reformation, largely in his own recorded voice, framed by Michelet. Michelet composed the work almost entirely in 1828–29, publishing it in 1835. As the translator of Vico's Scienza Nuova, he felt a need at that time to move from theory to application, to study the general in the individual, history in biography, humanity in one man and Luther was his chosen vehicle: a man complete in thought and action, whose entire life, down to its smallest words and deeds, had been recorded.Hard cover book.
