Summary

The Life and Pontificate of Leo the Tenth is William Roscoe's landmark biography of Giovanni de' Medici Pope Leo X (r. 1513–1521) second son of Lorenzo de' Medici "the Magnificent." It provides a detailed account of the life and reign of Pope Leo X, covering the political and religious climate of the period, the power struggles and controversies of his pontificate, and Leo's personal relationships with family and advisers. Roscoe drew on primary sources including papal documents, letters, and contemporary accounts, and supplied extensive footnotes and references. This second volume, the subject book, continues the narrative. Roscoe's work also traces Leo's patronage of scholarship and the arts he even had Sante Pagnini's Hebrew translation of the Bible transcribed and prepared for printing at his own expense against the backdrop of the Italian Wars, the rise of the Reformation, and Leo's controversial use of indulgences, the very practice that Martin Luther denounced in his 95 Theses.
