The Incomplete History of the Ringwood Croquet Club 1931-2021 By Lindsay Crawford 2022

History of Ringwood Bowls Club, Bamford Park, Miles Avenue, founded as Ringwood Bowling Club. There are four variations of the history, all kept in white binders with inserts containing various aspects of historical material. All four have been converted into searchable, digital format. 4598a Kept at RDHS Archives (01-02-01). Compiled in 1996 by A. Holliday and M. Pottenger, including earlier compilation in 1961 by Jack Knox and Wilfred Bamford. Contains a lot of historical documents. 4598b Kept at Ringwood Bowls Club premises. Mostly officebearers, awards and championships. 4598c Kept at Ringwood Bowls Club and RDHS archives premises. Mostly Ladies Section from 1959 to 2004. 4598d Kept at Ringwood Bowls Club and RDHS archives premises. From 1996 to 2004, mixed Ladies and Men's Sections.

Mr. J. K. McCaskill was a Mayor of Ringwood on several occasions and founder of Ringwood Historical Research Group.1.Typed letter on cream coloured paper to Mr. McCaskill from the Mother Prioress, Mother Bernard, to talk at the school on Ringwood History on 9th. August 1961 2.Hand written copy on cream coloured paper replying to the invitation with the acceptance to talk at the school on 24th. August at 1.45p.m. and signed J McCaskill. 3.Hand written letter written by Marlene Tankard to Mr. McCaskill thanking him for his talk. 4.Unused stationery with Borough of Ringwood Crest on each.

The idea for a Bowling Club was started by Mr. Bert Cocks, the Manager of the State Savings Bank when he arrived in Ringwood in 1929 but it took two years before a suitable site and was found and in 1931 the club as formed. Ther were 57 foundation members. The President was Councillor Arthur Blood and W. Cox, Secretary. Ten months later the first Annual Report stated that " the green was ready for sowing, a Club House with a billiard table , donations of light fittings and furnishings by members and committee and a balance sheet showing assets over liabilities of £446,3,8." The book continues until 1961.It was compiled by Members Jack Knox and Wilfred Bamford.Plain green hard-covered book (untitled) with 25 typed pages. Letter to members inviting them to read the story and pass the book onto other members. Foreword by the President in 1961

It was raised in 1950 and has been part of Ringwood's community for many years. The regiment gained Freedom of the City. RDHS Member Mike Potts has had a long aassociation with Ringwood Army Engineers and is extremely knowledgeable of its history and militaria covered in his presentation at our April General Meeting.

Terry Kane and Richard Carter were the authors of the short historyType written notes and plans pertaining to the land titles and history of the Ringwood Secondary College site from 1905, prior to the land being sold by the Borough of Ringwood in 1954 to the Education Department. Transcript of covering letter from Richard Carter to Mr T Kane dated 16 November 2012 - "Re: Ringwood Secondary College As we discussed recently, I have done some research into the history of the site. Going back to 1905, the site, then 26 acres one rood 37 perches, was in the name of Walter James Anderson of 61 William Street, Melbourne, Accountant - most likely a speculator. Title transferred to Theodosia Anderson of 167 Collins Street, Melbourne, Artist - possibly his son - In 1907. Theodosia Anderson was thus the owner when on abortive subdivision Into "110 Splendid Home Sites" as "Bedford Park Estate, Ringwood" took place In 1924, creating Anderson Street, Joyce Street, Adams Street and Graham Road, all of which sank without trace. Theodosia Anderson died In 1933, leaving the property to John Blair, Solicitor of Melbourne and Annie Benson of Melbourne, widow, until title ultimately passed to The Mayor, Councillors and Burgesses of the Borough of Ringwood In 1946. Title was then spilt Into three with 14 acres 0 rood 11 perches being transferred to the Minister of Education on 1954 followed by a further 2 acres 1 rood 26 perches to the Minister In 1956. The balance of the land remains In the ownership of the now Maroondoh City Council as Bedford Park. It Is Interesting that at no stage did any of the land belong to the Commonwealth of Australia, notwithstanding that I always understood It was the site of the P.M.G. Workers Camp after the War. Perhaps the P.M.G. utilized the site by arrangement with the borough of Ringwood; perhaps the camp was on the opposite site of Hill Street (Government Road). More research Is needed on this point. East Ringwood is still seen as a quiet place, having resisted large-scale development although many larger blocks now include multiple unit dwellings.

2 page document - first page being the introduction to the need for a High School in Ringwood, second page being the text of the historyThis short history deals with the need for a high school at Bedford Park, which satisfied the need for a large piece of land for buildings and sporting facilities, the installation of Mr Bennett as headmaster, the growth of the student population, the retirement of Mr Bennett and the appointment of Mr Ormandy as headmaster. American Field Service Exchange Scholarships were instituted and a Cadet Corps started up. The construction of the Assembly Hall and the Physical Education Centre was initiated under Mr Ormandy and finished under his replacemnt, Mr Hodge. A new Science block was completed in 1969.

A one page document on the history SS 4180 Ringwood East. In 1916 a petition signed by 33 residents was presented to the Minister of Education by Mr J Rouget M.L.A. stating the need for a school at Ringwood East. The District Inspector Mr A.N. Barry recommended a full time school for 75 to 100 children. The building was commenced in 1923. A second 3 page document on the history of the school written by J Hookey and states the 4 acre site was purchased from Mr Ted Lindsay for somewhere between 200 and 300 pounds. A.E. Wieland of Camberwell erected the the school at a cost to the Department of 2,227 pounds. It was opened on July 7th 1924 by the Head Teacher Mr Walter Whittle. 59 pupils were enrolled. Arthur Meyland was the first pupil enrolled. By 1969 the school consisted of 15 classrooms and a central library.
