Horace (Horrie) Albert Evington Smith born 14/11/1913 at Lilydale, married Marjorie Boyle (divorced 11/2/1937) nee Kilpatrick at 716 Rathdowne Street North Carlton. Horrie was registered as proprietor of the larger part of Crown Allotment 9J at the corner of Jumping Creek and Homestead Roads Wonga Park from 1958 to 1969 but appears to have occupied the property from possibly 1939 or earlier and at least 1948. He appears to have had at least 3 children Kevin Francis Smith born 17/12/1936 (died1985), Neville Albert Smith (died 2007) and at least one daughter Jeanette

In a letter dated 16 May 1989 to Blanche Shallard of the Shire of Eltham Historical Society, John Handfield advised that the house was designed by their friend Robin Boyd and that it was built in 1961. As of that date they had been the only occupants. They were still the owners when the house was included in the 1992 Shire of Eltham Heritage Study The 1992 Study advised: CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE Designed by well-known Victorian Architect Robin Boyd after he returned from lecturing architectural students in Japan, the Handfield residence shows the influence of traditional Japanese design in its modular wall arrangements, solid and glazed panels and sliding exterior doors. The courtyard planning, floor to ceiling glass walls and the combination of single and double storey sections on the steep site illustrate quite advanced dwelling design for its time. Designed to house three generations, grandparents, their children and grandchildren, the house at the time of the 1992 study was reported to be very intact. DESCRIPTION Quite advanced design, in planning and detailing. Plan U-shaped. Single and double storied; the arms of the U are basically single storied, while the base running parallel with the Yarra River is two storied. Walls timber stud framed?, asbestos cement sheet clad. Roofs flat?. Floors timber, some concrete?. Features include the modular wall design, courtyard planning, combination of single and double storey sections, internal planning and floor to ceiling glass walls. The photograph is from the album of Ivy Child. The woman standing on the veranda is her mother Ethel Child (nee Madden). The homestead is on Childs Road and belonged to Ted and Ethel Child. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. Used by R & J.M. Hooper of Homestead Road, Wonga Park on their Orchard Used in early orcharding to size fruit before packing. There are several different types of rings, but they all do the same thing, the numbers are inches of diameter, if the fruit sits on that ring and doesn’t drop through that is it’s size. Fruit of all the same diameter would be packed into a box in a pattern that didn’t move around.
