The Maxwell & Williams Designer Homewares brand first entered the marker in 1996. The company was founded by Max Grundmann whose parents Harry and Anna Grundmann were Holocaust survivors who migrated to Australia in 1961. Harry Grundmann started his own homewares business H.A.G. from a Brighton garage. In 1978, Max took over the business and was later joined by Bill Ryan, a retailer. The name "Maxwell and Williams" did not evolve until 1996. Their collections are now sold in more than 500 retail outlets across Australia and some 50 markets around the world. The Opportunity Shop – Established 1975 by Edna Barrie 1992 In 1985 the need for more shop space became apparent. Les [Bone] had plans drawn up (Surv 12/8/84) and approved by the Melton shire Council for a storeroom extension (17.800 x 9500) 1986 the small ancillary rooms at the rear of the timber church were demolished allowing the concrete slab to be laid. The building was completed in 1987. By the early 1900s the old timber Church had deteriorated, this lead to it being demolished in 2/11/1993. It was replaced with a new building containing a Pastoral Office, a meeting room and a furniture and homeware section. It was dedicated by Rev Ian Hickingbotham at 11am Sunday 5th June 1994. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 2000, were published as part of the newspaper’s ongoing column profiling local traders and businesses throughout the district. These photographs, taken by The Advocate, feature the staff and merchandise of Batavia Imports, a furniture and home furnishings retailer located at 160 McIntyre Road, Sunshine North. These photographs document the range of imported furniture, homewares, and decorative products offered by Batavia Imports, providing a record of the diverse businesses that operated within Sunshine North's commercial and industrial precinct during this period. The business name, "Batavia", references the historic Dutch name for Jakarta, Indonesia, reflecting the company's focus on imported furnishings and decorative items inspired by, or sourced from, Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asian region. The Advocate’s feature on local traders was a modest yet well‑liked column that played a meaningful role in strengthening community identity. Through these regular profiles, the newspaper promoted local businesses and helped shape Sunshine’s understanding of its developing commercial district.7748.01 - Batavia Imports 160 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 2000 Photographs (Advocate 131 And 146).JPG 7748.02 - Batavia Imports 160 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 2000 Photographs (Advocate 131 And 146).JPG 7748.03 - Batavia Imports 160 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 2000 Photographs (Advocate 131 And 146).JPG 7748.04 - Batavia Imports 160 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 2000 Photographs (Advocate 131 And 146).JPG 7748.05 - Batavia Imports 160 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 2000 Photographs (Advocate 131 And 146).JPG 7748.06 - Batavia Imports 160 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 2000 Photographs (Advocate 131 And 146).JPG 7748.07 - Batavia Imports 160 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 2000 Photographs (Advocate 131 And 146).JPG 7748.08 - Batavia Imports 160 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 2000 Photographs (Advocate 131 And 146).JPG 7748.09 - Batavia Imports 160 McIntyre Road Sunshine North 2000 Photographs (Advocate 131 And 146).JPGbatavia imports, mcintyre road, sunshine north

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1990, were published after the St Albans Stan Cash store closed its doors following ten years of operation. Stan Cash has one of the most colourful and unusual retail histories in Melbourne — rising from a “tin shed cowboy” discount chain in the 1970s–90s, collapsing, then being revived in the 2010s and finally being acquired by the BSR Group in 2021. Stan Cash became an iconic Melbourne discount retailer between the 1970s and 1990s, known for cut‑price electrical appliances, factory seconds, bedding and homewares, loud, humorous advertising and cowboy branding. Stan Cash was the largest electrical appliance retailer to trade in the St Albans area, and its closure marked a significant moment in the local commercial landscape.During the 1980's, St Albans saw the closure of several major retailers—including Fosseys, Treasureway, St Albans Builders & Hardware Supplies, Coles News World, Stevens’ Big Store, and now Stan Cash, each marking a significant moment in the suburb’s commercial landscape. These departures also meant that local residents increasingly needed to travel to larger shopping centres to make their purchases.6765.01 - Stan Cash Store St. Albans Staff 1990 Photograph (Advocate 15.1).JPG Pictured (L - R) Paul Guyett (State Manager), Tony Marano, Bill Hynes (St. Albans Store Manager), Zani Bessim, Mary Pletcher 6765.02 - Stan Cash Store St. Albans Staff 1990 Photograph (Advocate 15.1).JPG Pictured (L - R) Paul Guyett (State Manager), Tony Marano, Bill Hynes (St. Albans Store Manager), Zani Bessim, Mary Pletcherstan cash, main road east, st. albans

Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. In 1924, Arthur Arnold and his father Wilhelm Arnold had established a general store in High Street, near the water tower, but in 1931–32 they moved to new premises in High Street on the corner of what is now known as Elgin Boulevard. In 1933-34 they widened the frontage of the shop and added new premises at the rear for the sale of produce. As customer debt mounted during the depression, it became difficult for Arthur and Wilhelm to re-stock the shop, so they enticed customers into paying their accounts by rewarding them with a small individual cream or milk jug upon payment. The jugs were made in Czechoslovakia and displayed the war memorial, water tower and bandstand from Woodland Grove, Wodonga. The Arnolds continued to trade until they finally closed their store in 1950. It is no secret that copper is currently experiencing a huge upsurge in popularity. This is mainly thanks to its beautiful colour featuring heavily in the ranges of countless homeware retailers. There is, however, far more to this lustrous metal than just its appearance. For example, it has a greater level of thermal conductivity than any other metal (except silver); roughly 60% higher than aluminium and 3000% higher than stainless steel. This means copper is capable of heating up very quickly when compared to other metals. Perhaps a less commonly known property of copper is it being inherently antimicrobial. A wide range of harmful microbes are unable to survive for more than a couple of hours when in contact with a surface made of copper or one of its alloys (brass and bronze). This has led to it often being used for frequently touched surfaces such as door knobs, push plates and taps. A seemingly perfect material for cooking, it is therefore no surprise that it has been used in kitchens for millennia. But exactly when did we learn to utilise copper and its valuable assets? Origins It is hard to pin down an exact date when copper cookware was first introduced. Pieces discovered in regions of the middle east were dated as far back as 9000BC, suggesting cooking with copper began during the Neolithic period (≈10000-2000BC). As civilisations became increasingly capable in metallurgical techniques, metals such as copper became more widely used. It would have been around this time that copper replaced stone as the material used for making tools and cooking vessels. The use of copper is also well documented in Ancient Egypt. Not only was it used to produce water and oil containers, but it was also used to in medical practices. The antimicrobial nature of copper was exploited long before the concept of microorganisms was fully understood. The Smith Papyrus, a medical text written between 2600 and 2200BC records the use of copper in sterilising wounds and drinking water. Tin Lining Although copper is essential to many processes within the human body, it can become toxic if consumed in excess. It was this knowledge that gave rise to lining cookware with tin, a technique used for hundreds of years to prevent copper leaching in to food. These tin linings would eventually wear out and during the 18th and 19th century, it was common for people to send pans away to be re-tinned. This practice is becoming increasingly rare, as are the craftsmen who perform it. Despite this, there are still manufactures producing tin-lined copper cookware who also offer a re-lining service. Perhaps the best known of these is Mauviel, a French manufacturer who have been making this type of cookware since 1830. Tin has now largely been replaced by stainless steel as an interior cooking surface. Not only is it more cost effective, but the high grade of stainless steel used in premium cookware (typically 18/10) is highly resistant to corrosion and more durable than tin.Copper saucepans are still used in many kitchens.Small copper saucepan with long handle and three ridges around the circumference. Frances Burke: Designer of Modern Textiles Australia’s most influential and celebrated textile designer of the mid-20th century, Frances Burke (1904-1994), employed Australian native flora, garden flowers, marine subjects, Indigenous culture and increasingly, abstract motifs in her stunning modern fabrics. A confident, determined designer and businesswoman; Burke made the shift from fine art to design in 1937. While she began by designing dress fabrics for Melbourne’s fashionable Georges Department store, printing them on linen using lino blocks, she was an early adopter of the screen-printing process and during the war years began printing on cotton. Burke’s furnishing fabrics took their place in influential modern buildings Australia-wide through collaborations with leading architects and interior designers. They included Robin Boyd’s 1949 House of Tomorrow, Roy Grounds’ Quamby flats, Guilford Bell’s Royal Hayman Island Resort for Ansett Airlines, and Yuncken, Freeman Brothers, Griffiths and Simpson’s Canberra Civic Centre Theatre. In the post-war period, Burke made regular trips to the United States and Europe, on her return advising homeowners and manufacturers on the latest trends in products, colours and home design in lectures and interviews. At New Design her fabric showroom and interior design consultancy Burke introduced furniture by emerging designers Clement Meadmore and Grant Featherston in the early 1950s and presented local and imported homewares, mostly from the United States. She was enthusiastic about the convenient and comfortable lifestyle experienced by ordinary American women. Her fabrics and advice were regularly featured in Australian Home Beautiful, Australian House and Garden and the newspapers of the day. Some of Burke’s designs had remarkable longevity. Tiger Stripe (1938) for example, continued to be produced in a wide range of colours until 1970 and Crete (1946) remained a popular choice for interiors into the 1960s. Drawing from a rich variety of sources including Indigenous culture in Goanna (c.1954) and Pacific Island tapa cloth designs in Bird and Tree (1940), Burke also looked to Japan in designs such as Plum Blossom (1948) and Zen (1965). She loved exploring the potential of native flora, seen in designs including Waratah (1955) and Flannel Flower (1955), while garden flowers were the source for many other designs including Belladonna (1940), Periwinkle (n.d.) and Rose (1947). Burke’s clever interplay of a single striking printed colour with lively gestural lines revealing the white base fabric, gave her designs a vibrancy that characterised the optimistic post-war era. This can be seen in Burke’s fabrics for Hayman Island including Angel Fish and Seapiece (both 1949) which expressed the freshness and excitement of the luxurious new tropical resort and led to further commissions. Burke’s three decades in business (1937-1970) were an unparalleled success in the story of Australian design. Her fabrics have been collected by the NGA, the Powerhouse Museum, NGV, RMIT Design Archives and Sydney Living Museums in addition to Ararat Gallery TAMA.
