The stables are described: "The original single stall brick stables building with loft, built in 1859-60.."These horseshoes were dug up by the owners of the property adjoining the former Eltham Police Station and Court House site behind the stables when working in their garden. Presumably they were discarded adjacent to the stables where the Police horses were kept and over time became covered with soil and other material. This horseshoe was carried by Ena Todd when she married Jack Heazlewood in Warrnambool in 1942. When she married Jack Heazlewood he was a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney. They later lived on Sydney. This horseshoe is of interest, firstly as a sample of the type of good luck ornament often carried by brides in the 20th century, and secondly as a memento of the wedding day of Ena Todd, a resident of Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. This is a wooden horseshoe, painted silver and decorated with raised white flowers and green tracery. Attached to the horseshoe is a white ribbon tied with a bow at the end. This dress was a wedding dress. Horseshoes have always been a traditional symbol associated with good luck . . Because the horseshoe is " U " shaped, to retain the the good luck forever, it is essential that the horseshoe is hung by the ribbons which are attached to the shoulders. Large horseshoe magnet, given to young E.J. Hartung. by an uncle. Ernst Johannes Hartung was a chemist and astronomer. Educated at the University of Melbourne (BSc 1913, DSc 1919), he became lecturer in 1919, associate professor in 1924, and succeeded Rivett as chair of chemistry in 1928, remaining in this position until 1953. Hartung?s lecturing style surged with enthusiasm and he employed the use of screen projections to demonstrate chemical phenomena to large undergraduate classes. In 1935 he recorded Brownian movement in colloidal solutions on 35 mm cinefilm, which was later copied onto 16 mm film for the Eastman Kodak Co. World Science Library. This can be viewed in the Chemistry laboratory. He researched the photo decomposition of silver halides, and was awarded the David Syme Prize in 1926. He devoted time to the design and construction of a large, new chemistry building for the School of Chemistry (built 1938?1939). During World War II he was approached by Professor Thomas Laby, chairman of the Optical Munitions Panel, to chair the advisory committee on optical materials, to produce high quality optical glass in Australia. This was successful, with large-scale production achieved within ten months at a reasonable cost. Hartung served three terms as general President of the (Royal) Australian Chemical Institute, was an ex-officio councillor of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, and a Trustee of the Museum of Applied Science (now part of Museum Victoria).Horseshoe Magnet

The 'Horseshoe Bridge' is possibly the most famous bridge on Puffing Billy's route. Built crossing the Monbulk Creek in Selby in 1899, it was a difficult engineering project due to the required curve. It remained in use through the line's main operation, before undergoing extensive repairs in the 1980s in preparation for the tourist line's extension to Gembrook. It is unclear precisely when this photograph was taken, with speculation ranging from 1920 to 1950.The Horseshoe Bridge is an iconic symbol of the region's historical railways; this photograph of it in original operation is a valuable record of its history. This item is a printed photocopy of a Rose Series postcard. It includes a black and white picture of a steam train crossing a curving wooden trestle bridge, pulling seemingly six or seven carriages. The bridge crosses a valley, with forested hills rising on either side. A power or telegraph line runs through the valley. There is a printed caption and series number below the photograph. The reverse is blank besides an accession number written in the bottom-right.Lower left corner: "THE ROSE SERIES P. 343" Lower edge, centre: "TRAIN CROSSING THE HORSESHOE BRIDGE."selby, puffing billy, horseshoe bridge, railway

Sometimes called a sweetheart postcard, it was a way of sending thoughts to the troops overseas. The poem on the front, with the image of a woman writing to her loved ones, says: "In distance we are far apart . . . / Yet loving thoughts can span the ocean blue / And warm good wishes sent in fond remembrance / Speed swiftly o'er the sea from me to you.' The British, Australian and French flags and Australia wattle provide more symbolism, the horseshoes for luck, and a hand shake. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920.A record of correspondence with the troops in World War 1 and sending good wishes with a hamper. This is a protector used to cover the shirts or jackets of military or other uniforms that had brass buttons. The horseshoe shape enabled the button to be isolated from the rest of the top and made it easier to clean and polish without getting the jacket soiled. It would have been a common item in military or militia or band member families in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They may even be still used today for regimental uniforms. This item has no known local provenance but is of interest as an example of a cleaning object in days gone by. This is a brass button protector in the shape of a horseshoe with straight sides and rounded tips. It is slightly misshapen. It has an advertisement for Brasso metal polish etched into the brass. ‘Use Brasso Metal Polish’button cleaner/protector, brass, warrnambool, military
