Made by Duncan and Fraser for fitting to horse-drawn tramcars and possibly other products of their Adelaide workshops. See 565 and 8744 for other examples.Demonstrates Duncan and Fraser's workshop practice of putting their name on some fittings.Duncan and Fraser, Adelaide SA window lifter or bracket to enable a horse tram window to be lifted in the window frame. Cast brass, about 40mm in diameter with a right angle lug to enable a person to lift the window. Words "Duncan & Fraser" cast around the outside of the device and the words "Adelaide S.A." cast into the centre. Has been drilled with three countersunk holes. Has brown paint on the lifting portion. On the rear, possibly the letters "5L", scratched into the metal. If this is the case, could have indicated the fifth left hand window as an identification of location. Given to the BTM 1995 by Doug Prosser, of the TMSV, said to be from Ballarat Horse Tram No. 1 horse trams, duncan & fraser, window furniture, tramcar component, tramcars, tramways -

Two photos of Legatee Hugh Caffrey in 1995. Event and reason for the photo is not known. It is believed that he was Hugh William Caffrey with Service number VX120388 who served in the second world war in the 2/12 Australian Infantry Battalion. Born in 1921 in Maffra. From his medals, he served in the Pacific in the Second World War, as he has (from left to right) the Pacific Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-45, The Australia Service Medal 1939-45, and last is the 1977 EIIR Silver Jubilee medal. Hugh Gray was the son of Charles Gray and Robina Tait. Hugh was born on 7 January 1810 at Alloa Clackmananshire, Scotland, and married Elizabeth Paterson on 8 July 1831 at Glascow, Scotland. Hugh, Elizabeth and their eight children boarded the 'Borneuf' and set sail for Australia from Glasgow on 20 May 1852. In October 1853 Hugh Gray set up a blacksmiths forge on Main Road Ballarat. He was a member of the Ballarat Reform League. In July 1857 he donated 5 pounds to the Humffray Testimonial on behalf of the Blacksmith Association. In 1858 and 1877 he was the President of the Caledonian Society, and a committee member at other times. Gray was also one of the first promoters of the Mechanics' Institute. On 14 March 1869 Hugh Gray started the Philosophical Association of Ballarat. Hugh Gray died on 02 June 1880. His obituary notes '... all the patrons of the long since dead Caledonian sports will remember his shepherd's plaid costume and his untiring energy at the annual gathering whether as president or committee member to even a private member of the society. his end was peaceful and he will be buried as he wished in good old Scottish fashion ...'Photograph of Hugh Gray.ballarat, blacksmith, hugh gray, hugh grey, scotland, scottish, caledonian, kilt, borneuf -
