In 1954 Beechworth had 170 migrants from the UK, 102 from Hungary, and 63 from Germany. ...Elgin Shoes Pty., Ltd., established a branch shoe factory in Beechworth in 1946. Managing director, Mr T Nagle Pitman, selected Beechworth as a suitable location for the factory due to the availability of labour in the town, particularly girls under sixteen years of age. At its peak, the shoe factory employed thirty six women and girls, which also included post-war migrants. After the Second World War, Australia admitted increasing numbers of immigrants in order to fulfil labour requirements for a rapidly inflating demand of consumer goods. These migrants were largely from European Countries in line with the ‘White Australia Policy’. In 1954 Beechworth had 170 migrants from the UK, 102 from Hungary, and 63 from Germany. The factory closed in 1961 as increased centralisation of both populations and industry in the larger nearby towns of Wangaratta and Wodonga lead to the closure of many factories in small towns in the 1960s and 1970s. This photograph is historically significant as it shows the working conditions in a factory primarily staffed by women at some point between the late 1940s and early 1960s. ... The German crew were all killed as were a number of Australians ypres st martins wood skoda gun The Skoda 7.5 cm Gebirgskanone M. 15 was a mountain gun used by Austria-Hungary in World War I. ...The Germans bought some guns during World War I, but used them as infantry guns in direct support of the infantry where their light weight would allow them to move with the infantry. They complained that the guns were too fragile and didn't have a high enough muzzle velocity to act as an anti-tank gun. Considering that the guns were designed to be disassembled it's not too surprising that they couldn't stand the abuse moving through the shell-pocketed front lines on the Western Front. This particular Gun was captured by Australian Soldiers at the Battle of ST Martins Wood near Ypres in the 3rd Battle for the Somme. The German crew were all killed as were a number of AustraliansThe Skoda 7.5 cm Gebirgskanone M. 15 was a mountain gun used by Austria-Hungary in World War I. In German service it was known as the 7.5 cm GebK 15. Its development was quite prolonged as the Austrians couldn't decide on the specifications that they wanted. Initially they wanted a gun that could be broken-down into no more than 5 pack-animal loads to replace the various 7 cm mountain guns in service, but prolonged trials proved that the 7.5 cm M. 12 prototype to be the best gun. The guns were delivered beginning in April 1915 instead of the planned date of April 1914. For transport, the gun could be dismantled into 6 parts, generally carried in 4 loads. In addition, there was a gun shield fitted on some (perhaps many) such guns. ypres st martins wood skoda gun -

Named for János Veres(s) (1903–1979), a Hungarian internist working with tuberculosis patients. At the time, one of the mainstays of treatment was to collapse an infected lung and allow lesions to heal. The needle was introduced as a safer technique to give patients such pneumothoraces. It was not until 1938, when he published his invention in the German literature, that the needle became more broadly known outside of Hungary. (Wikipedia) Believed to have been used and donated by Dr Geoff Bishop. Two Veres needles of differing lengths. Metal, spring loaded needle with an outer cannula and an inner stylus. Consists of a thin, hollow shaft with a bevelled point at one end, encasing a spring loaded needle/stylus with an eyelet at the end. Opposite end of needle consists of an open valve leading to the inner needle with a bulbous connection point. There is a round protrusion at the bottom of the bulbous connection point, and a small oval shaped grip at the top of this point, running parallel to the body of the instrument. A metal barrel containing the spring sits adjacent to the connection point. The barrel can be unscrewed to access the spring inside. The oval shaped grip on the shorter needle is engraved with the text 'WISAP/W. GERMANY'. The oval shaped grip on the longer needle is engraved with the number '3'. The number '30 is also engraved at the base of the barrel on the longer needle. 'WISAP/W.GERMANY', '3'gynaecology, surgery -

He went to Budapest as a youth to become an apprenticed silversmith, then travelled as a 'journeyman' across Europe living and working in Vienna and Paris between 1843-1846. He then set up business in London for six years before embarking on journey to the Australian goldfields arriving in 1853. With a lack of success mining for gold, Leviny established business as a jeweller and watchmaker in Castlemaine and between 1854 and 1862 found time to create major decorative works in gold and silver for which he is best remembered. After retiring from business in 1863 he purchased the house, Delhi Villa, married Bertha Hudson (English-born Tasmanian) in December 1864 and together they had ten children, later renaming the family home Buda (after Budapest). He died in 1905 purported to be the wealthiest gentleman in Castlemaine at that time. Two works made by Leviny are held in the collection at the National Gallery of Victoria: the Silver Standing Cup with Cover c1859 (or Saint Cup), and a Gold Bracelet with inset garnet and diamonds c1860.Albumen, sepia toned 'carte-de-visite' photograph of Ernest Leviny in 1866. The monument, created by Australian sculptor Karl Duldig, was initiated by Free Wallenberg Australia with the support of the former City of Kew. ...Situated in a small park at Kew Junction, the 'Monument to Raoul Wallenberg' commemorates the courageous Swedish diplomat and humanitarian Raoul Wallenberg who undertook one of the most significant rescue of Jews during the Holocaust in World War Two. He was captured by Soviet troops in Budapest Hungary in 1945. The monument, created by Australian sculptor Karl Duldig, was initiated by Free Wallenberg Australia with the support of the former City of Kew. Unveiled in 1985, it was the last public work created by Duldig. Born in Poland, Duldig and his family fled Vienna in 1938 following the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany, eventually settling in Australia in 1941. As a sculptor, he was instrumental in introducing the Modernist style to an Australian audience, won the 1956 Victorian Sculptor of the Year Award and had an annual lecture established in his name by the National Gallery of Victoria. The artist’s home and studio have been preserved through the Duldig Studio museum and sculpture garden in Malvern East. The Duldig Studio holds the original terracotta maquette, the original of the bust and a number of working drawings of the 'Monument to Raoul Wallenberg'. A plaque on the rear of the sculpture reads: RAOUL WALLENBERG Swedish Diplomat, Humanitarian, Hero Of The Holocaust.
