Trophy presented by The Corio Freezing Works Cricket Club to the Geelong Industrial Cricket Association in 1927 for competition and won by the Excelsior Mills 'A' Cricket Club for the 1929-1930 season.Trophy has cricket stumps and two crossed bats forming handle on lid. Lid attaches to a large cup with thin handles protruding either side, cup also features inscription on front. Below the cup is a thin metal stand with which the handles meet. The Collins No. 2 Woollen Mill building dates from around the 1930s, however related buildings at that site were first constructed from around 1918, that was the Marnock Vale Wool Scouring Works. The Union Woollen Mill founded in the 1870s by William Henry Collins, a major Geelong industrial enterprise, was among the local firms which flourished during the First World War period. From 1914-1918 Collins Bros. concentrated on equipment for the A. I. F. However, afterwards Collins Bros. Pty. Ltd. specialised in the manufacture of flannels and blankets. From 1920 to 1938 the output was increased by fifty percent, and the number of employees rose to 200. The Collins Bros. No. 2 Mill was established in Bridge Street, Newtown. The proprietary brand 'Physician' became well and favourably known throughout Australia source: Heritage Victoria The Collins Bros Mills No. 1 and No. 2 hired over 250 people, and produced between 40,000 and 60,000 blankets for both the Australian market and for overseas export. Francis John Newberry founded the Victoria Foundry and Enameling Works in 1890 with a workmate from the Humbles iron foundry in Lupton Street Geelong where he worked. Newberry & Walker Foundry & Enameling Works was built adjoining a cottage that was to be the home of the Newberry family during the ensuing years. Although Walker soon relocated to New Zealand, the Newberry and Walker foundry had become a local success. The foundry produced numerous cast iron products such as washing copper frames, and friezes, balustrades and verandah columns. Verandah posts are to be found in declining numbers, but the Newberry and Walker mark can sometimes be seen on the few which remain. A certain number of iron culvert posts were also made; some of them were still in place on the road to Cressy as late as 1961. Perhaps half the iron friezes on Geelong West verandahs came from the local firm’s foundry. Mr. George Thomas' connection with Collingwood Technical School began as a junior technical student at Collingwood in 1913. He then became an apprentice in the electrical trades during which time he also undertook a Diploma course in Electrical Engineering. Mr Thomas was appointed as a teacher (part-time) of Electrical Wiring at Collingwood in 1922 having had previous experience teaching in Geelong at the Gordon Institute of Technology. In 1930 Mr Thomas became a full-time teacher in Electrical Trades, the year of the commencement of the Apprenticeship Commission in Victoria. In 1937 he was instrumental in introducing electroplating as a trade whereas it had previously only been taught as a section of the Electrical Trades. This was a period of severe economic constraints following the Great Depression and spending on education was limited. Needing the latest knowledge of industrial practices, Mr Thomas canvassed electroplating industries around Melbourne seeking employment opportunities and met with favourable responses. He approached Quinton’s electroplating firm in North Melbourne with the proposal to work for them on Saturday mornings without payment. In return for his labour, he asked to be taught the basics of the trade. During the week he was able to impart his knowledge to his students. Initially, he wanted to develop electroplating as an outlet for the Youth Employment Training Scheme. Once the class was firmly established, he submitted a proposal to the Education Department to establish an Electroplating Department, and this became the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. He gave up teaching in 1939 to become the Northcote City Electrical Engineer where he served for 26 years. During this time he was also a Consulting Electrical Engineer to Box Hill and Port Melbourne Councils. His association with Collingwood Technical School (and later, College) continued, first as an examiner on the State Electricity Commission (SEC) panel and from 1947 as a member of the School Council. He was president of the Council in 1961 and 1962. He also represented the College on the Northern Regional Council and participated in the selection of Electrical Trades teachers. For four years, 1967-1971, he represented the metropolitan Technical Schools and Colleges on the Council of the Monash University, in which capacity he gave outstanding service to technical education. George H. Thomas attended his first Council meeting on June 12, 1947 and remained on the Council until the secondary and post-secondary sections were separated in 1981 – a period in excess of 34 years. James Curnow served as a key official for the Geelong Jubilee Juvenile and Industrial Exhibition in 1887. This exhibition was a major event held to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and to encourage young people in trades and the "fine arts and ornamental works". The illuminated address is authenticated by the signatures of the exhibition's committee members. It is decorated with floral motifs and hand-painted scenes including a sailing ship and the Melbourne Exhibition Building, which was the central hub for these types of colonial celebrations in Melbourne.An illuminated address presented to James Henry Curnow, Esq., by the Committee of the Geelong Jubilee Juvenile and Industrial exhibition, 1887. The Valley Worsted Mills were established in 1924 on Swanston Street in South Geelong and quickly grew to become the largest and most modern textile mill in Australia, employing roughly 500 workers at its peak. Built out of distinctive red Geelong brick with iconic Art Deco white trimmings and a sawtooth roofline, the massive 11-acre complex served as a major manufacturing cornerstone during the height of the region's historic wool boom. The mill operated at high production for nearly 50 years before merging with John Foster & Son in December 1973, subsequently closing down entirely in the mid-1970s. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the female workforce at Valley Worsted Mills and other local Geelong textile factories became more vital than ever. Because women were historically paid significantly lower wage rates than men for equivalent labor, local mills increasingly relied on them to keep operating costs low during severe economic strain. These young women, often referred to affectionately as "mill girls," typically started working as young as 14 to 16 years old. They filled specialized, highly skilled roles as menders, warpers, and weavers. For many families in the Geelong region, the steady industrial employment of these women provided a crucial financial lifeline when male breadwinners faced widespread unemployment. Beyond their grueling factory shifts, the mill women maintained a vibrant social culture, even forming organized recreation groups like the Valley Worsted Mills Women’s Basketball team during this era. Small dark red leather-bound folder/binder/booklet. Front cover has a gold circular stamp in the upper centre of cover. Folder contains brief information about the Albion Mills in Geelong, several images of sheep and a glossary of common woolen and textile industry terms. Folder was stored in a plastic sleeve with an envelope with two stamps advertising industrial events in Bradford. The writing on the envelope appears to be German or similar.ALBION MILLS/ GEELONG

The Shire of Braybrook (1871–1951) was a vast, semi‑rural municipality stretching from Melton to West Melbourne, centred on the old Braybrook village at Solomon’s Ford. It transformed dramatically with the arrival of railways, the rise of Braybrook Junction/Sunshine, and the industrial boom driven by H.V. McKay’s Harvester Works. The area was first organised as the Braybrook Road District on 28th May 1860, after a public meeting at the Shamrock Hotel in Albion. The district was enormous, extending from Melton to Dynon Road on the West Melbourne swamp. Early settlement clustered around Solomon’s Ford on the Maribyrnong River, a key crossing for travelers heading to Geelong, Williamstown, and the goldfields. On 23rd January 1871, the Road District became the Shire of Braybrook. Council meetings were initially held in Maidstone, reflecting the early population centres. The Braybrook Shire Hall in Deer Park was built in 1885. That 1885 building was the first official hall and council offices for the Shire of Braybrook, long before the municipality shifted its centre of gravity toward Sunshine. It stood near the Deer Park Hotel and served as the administrative heart of the shire during the late 19th century. The Braybrook Shire Hall at Deer Park effectively closed as a council headquarters in 1930, when the Shire of Braybrook shifted its administrative centre to Sunshine. In 1951, the Shire of Braybrook was renamed the City of Sunshine, reflecting the shift of population and industry eastward. In 1994 - 1995 the Kennett Government reduced Victoria’s councils from 210 to 78, the largest restructuring of local government in the state’s history and this part of the City of Sunshine became the City of Brimbank. It is believed this extension table came from the Shire of Braybrook Shire Office located in Ballarat Road, Deer Park, opposite the Deer Park Hotel. Over the years this extension table was used in the Shire of Braybrook Shire Office Ballarat Road Deer Park, the Shire of Braybrook and City of Sunshine Memorial Hall Hampshire Road Sunshine and in the City of Sunshine Municipal Offices Alexandra Avenue Sunshine. When the City of Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine closed down, this table was were presented to the Sunshine & District Historical Society by the City of Brimbank.
