This book enabled students to complete a practical course by following the graded Exercises and Lessons and by testing their progress. Historical: Typing was taught at Intermediate level during the 1940's for students living in the Kiewa Valley. Nissen Lodge was built by 1953 at Falls Creek. The first lodge at Falls Creek was built in 1947 by SECV staff members. By the 1954 Ski Season, Falls Creek Alpine Village had 10 club lodges, plus a ski tow house and a commercial lodge that both provided skier accommodation. Several other club lodges were under construction. The Nissen Alpine Club operated a rope tow with a 240m rise in altitude..Ski lessons were also available. Re: Tony and Skippy St Elmo Beveridge See KVHS 1113 By 1953, the SECV was issuing entry permits for private cars used by skiers with bookings in a Falls Creek lodge.The Nissen Ski Lodge was one of the early ski lodges at Falls Creek. Toni St Elmo Beveridge was involved in the early development of skiing at Falls Creek including assisting with the building of the early lodges, and establishing the Nissen Ski School. See KVHS 1113. The Scripture Referendum was held on the same day as the Victorian Parliamentary Elections, in which J. Bowser ran against A.K. Buckley for a seat in the legislative assembly in the electoral district of Wangaratta and Rutherglen. The Scripture Referendum had three questions: "1. Humberstone's Royal Hotel was a substantial 2-storey building on the corner of Canterbury and Broughton Road. The hotel was built in 1887 to replace an older hotel (Delany's Hotel) built further east in 1856. It was de-licensed in 1921 after a "Local Option Poll" and became Tower House Day & Boarding School under Miss Marion Beetson from 1922 until 1932. It was demolished in 1932. There were 25 students in the 1920's, mostly boarders from outside Surrey Hills and all primary school students. The school room was detached from the main building and there was 6 acres of playing area. The old bar was the business office, the girls' dormitory the old dining room. Marion Beetson was the teacher, Mary Beetson managed the household. Their father was an Indian Army officer. The younger children wore a school blazer with the T.H.C. badge on the pocket. Miss Susan Kelsall visited to give piano lessons and Prof. Kelsall taught French. Miss Marion Beetson died in Castlemaine on 8 February 1952. Australian Magazine (A.M.) published a special three page article about Falls Creek and the Bogong High Plains on 24th August 1954. The article was titled "Australia's playground of the future". Written by Muir Maclaren, it referred to the Bogong High Plains as a comparatively new and unexploited winter playground which could be one of the best snow resorts in the world. There were 13 huts which were at Falls Creek which were there due to "hard work, the grace of God, and the permission of the Victorian State Electricity Commission". A brief history of the Albury Ski Club Lodge was included. In 1954 the Lodge was run byLes Meikle and had the Club had a membership of 200 people. Lodges with accommodation established at this time, with the ability to house a total of 280 people, included Albury, Skyline, Bogong, Myrtleford, Hymans, Dawn, Galleon, Kiewa Valley, Snowden, Nelse, Moroma, Trowalla, St, Trinian's, Bowna and Nissen. Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Page 153 - an advertisement for ski lessons, tours and accommodation for skiers with Bob Hymans. A second advertisement for Pearce Bros., General Merchants at Tawonga stated they could arrange for food supplies for clubs or ski parties to be delivered into lodges at city prices. Page 168 feature a photo by H. Gibbs - On the road to Falls Creek, beyond Howman's Gap, showing slopes of of Spion Kopje in the background. Page 177 - The Galleon Ski Club had opened its books to a limited number of Associate Members and offered its Members use of the "GALLEON" Lodge. Associate Membership fee was set at £1/1/- per annum. Lodge fees were 12/6 per day per member. Page 182 announced ALBURY Ski Club's Annual Ball will be held this year on November 28th. The event promised to live up to the reputation of the previous year's very happy "do" at Toonallook Woolshed, and it should be worth going a long way to be in it, even to devoting the whole weekend to a visit. This notebook has handwritten notes commenced in 1887 by Duncan McColl. The notes include lessons on the first 12 chapters of the Acts of the Apostles for the Grasmere Bible Class, other religious passages that appear to be copied from outside sources and some personal notes regarding McColl's potato growing and the medicine he is taking. The Grasmere Bible Class was perhaps associated with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Grasmere where a Sunday School had been established in 1887. Research needs to be undertaken regarding further information on Duncan McColl.This notebook is of interest as an example of the interest in religion by some of the residents of Warrnambool and district in the late 19th century. This is a small notebook with a black cover. There is a postage stamp on the inside front cover. The pages have printed blue and red lines originally intended for the keeping of accounts.
