A hacksaw is a fine-toothed saw, originally and principally for cutting metal. They can also cut various other materials, such as plastic and wood; for example, plumbers and electricians often cut plastic pipe and plastic conduit with them. On hacksaws, as with most frame saws, the blade can be mounted with the teeth facing toward or away from the handle, resulting in cutting action on either the push or pull stroke. In normal use, cutting vertically downwards with work held in a bench vice, hacksaw blades should be set to be facing forwards. This work box belonged to Miss Mary Southcombe who, with her parents Thomas and Mary came from Devon Wales to Portland on the sailing ship "Clara" in 1854. Later that year they settled in Belfast (Port Fairy). The Sandhurst Industrial Exhibition was held in Sandhurst at the Market Building and Corn Exchange and was opened by the Marquis of Normandy on the 17th March 1879. Modelled on a similar event held in Ballarat the previous year which was largely aimed at displaying the work of juvenile artisans, the Sandhurst Exhibition was more general in its purpose and provided more space for the general exhibition of products, natural and manufactured from the broader surrounding district. The opening event included a procession of all the friendly societies, fire brigades and other local institutions. This card table is part of a special bequest to the Mont De Lancey Museum of hand carved furniture and items made by Mr Franz Striezel by his grandaughter Mrs Dorothy Adamson. Dorothy was a friend of Nella Lord (nee Sebire). Dorothy passed away in 2007. It was to be known as The Franz Striezel Collection. Franz Streizel came from Germany in 1886 and was one of the three recognised craftsmen (Art Carvers) in Australia who contributed to the wood carvings in public buildings and honour boards throughout Australia. The National Gallery at their request had two small panels and a tobacco jar (some of his work), donated by Mrs D Adamson.
