Ringwood Technical School was the first co-educational technical school in Victoria. In 1963, 229 Form 1 students were enrolled, being the biggest student intake so far in the school’s 5 year history, bringing the school population close to 700 in Forms 1 to 4. Extensions to the 3 year old building were under way to cope with the increasing student numbers. Experienced teachers came from all parts of the State to teach in this unique school, The school was known locally as Ringwood Tech School, Ringwood Tech, Ringy Tech, Ringers Tech, The Tech and RTS. It began in 1958 with Form 1 boys, then Form 1 girls in 1959 at a separate campus. Both groups were hosted at district schools until 1960, when the new school was completed at Heathmont. It was the first co-ed technical school in Victoria. The school underwent several name and role changes in later years, and finally closed in 2003.This is the parent record for the large archives collection of Ringwood Technical School (later Eastern Secondary College), consisting of class and group photos, trip and other photos, and various documents and magazines from the school's beginning in 1958 to its closure in 1993. He performed on the University's historic Erard Grand Concert piano on stage in Founders Hall, describing it as "absolutely amazing.' The instrument was 93 years old and hadn't been played for more than eighty years. An audience of 500 were entertained with pieces by Schubert and Bach for the first half of the program and Waltzes, Mazurkas, and Polonaises by Chopin after the interval. The pages shown are a small selection of the Album. Photos cover Skill at Arms, relaxing, socializing, parade ground, weapons display, bush time and The 8th Battalion Colours/on parade. The Album belonged to Graeme Arthur Jones, enlisted on 1.2.1967 in the 1st Intake National Service for that year. He was posted to 1 PL A Coy 2RTB (Recruit Training) Regt No 3790932. After approx 10 weeks he is posted 20 PL E Coy 3 TB (Infantry Training) Singleton for another approx 10 weeks. Finally he would be posted to A Coy 8 RAR. 8 RAR had deployed to Malaya in Oct 1967. Graeme's National Service was completed and he was discharged on 31.1.1969. His service with 8 RAR in Malaya was 1 year 93 days. A number of people have been identified in the album by a former A Coy Member. In one photo: Sgt Ebner, Barry Popworth, R Venables, George Newton. On an other photo has Keith Boase. This bottle was manufactured in 1954 and donated alongside an accompanying note which implies it was a free school milk bottle given to a girl in Grade 2 in that year. In 2018 it was shown to the original recipient's grandchild, who wrote the accompanying note, before both were likely donated to us. The year of manufacture can be determined from the '4' by the Australian Glass Manufacturers maker's mark; the context indicates the bottle is from the 1950s, while the 4 indicates it is from a year ending with 4. The free school milk program for children up to 13 was established by the Federal Government in 1950 and implemented in Victoria by 1951. This was not the first free milk program - for example, Victoria had a winter-only program for a time - but was the first to standardise it across Australia. The program continued for two decades until a 1973 report assessed that the program was poor value for money, causing the Whitlam government to abolish it. In the words of Australian Food Timeline: "Recollections of the scheme vary. While some remember it fondly, most seem to have unpleasant memories of milk left to become warm and unappetising. Many claim it put them off milk forever. Personally, I would rank the abolition of school milk as one of the crowning achievements of the Whitlam government."The free milk program in many ways seems to be a remnant of a time where Australian nutrition policy aimed to counter hunger and maximise caloric intake rather than minimise it. This bottle and its accompanying note is an example of how much nutrition policy and educational standards has changed since the 1950s.This item was donated with a printed note which has been included in its record. This main item is a small glass milk bottle with a thread for a screw-on lid (not included). For a little over half its heigh, the walls of the bottle are vertical, before they curve inwards to make the top slightly narrower than the base. The base is stipled, and near the base is a makers mark and a pattern of dots denoting the mould from which the bottle was formed. The printed note is two pages, stapled in the top-left corner, with page numbers handwritten in red in the top right.Bottle, Makers Marking: "4 [Australian Glass Manufacturers Logo] M10357" Accompanying Note: Page 1: "I interviewed my Grandma about when she was in / Grade 1 in 1953 and how school has changed to / now in 2018. / That is 65 years difference." He served with the RAN aboard HMAS Tingira a training ship for boys during the First World War. He died by accidental drowning in Sydney on 16/3/1919. In 1911 Sobraon was purchased by the Commonwealth Government for £15,000 and fitted out as a boy’s training ship at Mort’s Dock Balmain. The name chosen for her was an aboriginal word meaning ‘open sea’ and she was commissioned into the RAN as HMAS Tingira on 25 April 1912. On 1 June 1912 the first batch of 37 boys recruited from New South Wales joined Tingira. Drafts from other states quickly followed, completing the first intake of 100. The initals engraved on the side are those of his mother, Edith May Lock,This item is part of a collection of items owned by Arthur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. It has particular local significance as the battalion was know as "Albury's Own" because a large majority of the battalion's initial intake of volunteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region.
