This is a photocopy of an original article written by SE Reilly titled "Soldier Surveyors" that was then republished in the Australian Surveyor March 1983 Vol 31 No. 5 pages 315 - 326. The Author was Capt SE Riley MBE Hon FIS Aust, FRICS, President of the Institution of Surveyors, Australia 1957-1959. Includes Histories of both UK and Australian Mapping Agencies. This document records in detail with Names, the contribution of Officers of the Crown in the early stages of the settlement of Australia. Starting in 1787 their contributions were significant with most occupying positions as State Surveyors General and eventually contributing to the formation of the Australian Intelligence Corps in 1907, a survey section within the Australian Engineers 1910 and eventually the Australian Survey Corps in 1915. This is a report prepared by the Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corps Brigadier L Fitzgerald OBE, FIS Aust for presentation at the Institution of Surveyors, Australia, 6th Survey Conference held in Adelaide in March 1962. This document mentions the beginning of mapping in 1907 in the Australian Intelligence Corps and how the Survey Corps was formed in 1915. The story continues until 1962. Built in 1856 by J.T.C. Balderstedt as an eight-room, two-storey red brick house near the New Chum gold reef. Extended in 1869 with a three-room gabled wing. Surrounded by ornate gardens and a masonry wall, overlooking gold mining operations. Purchased by George Lansell in 1871 for 20,000 pounds. Lansell made significant additions and modifications; he died in 1906. By 1938, the property was in disrepair but avoided demolition.In 1942, the Australian military sought a secure location for map printing and storage north of the Great Dividing Range. The Commonwealth acquired a lease on Fortuna, and Army tradesmen made alterations. Major Sari and 150 men arrived in June 1942. The Australian Survey Corps and Women's Army Corps produced classified mapping documents during World War II. Purchased by the Commonwealth Government in 1951. The Royal Australian Survey Corps was disbanded in 1996.D efence Imagery and Geospatial Organisation (DIGO) was established in 2000 in Canberra and Bendigo to provide geospatial intelligence for defence.In 2004, it was announced that DIGO operations would remain in Bendigo but move from Fortuna. The New Moon Company was registered by William Vinton in the Victorian Government Gazette (45) on Friday 8th July, 1870. (page 984), The place of operation was Napoleon Gully, Eaglehawk, Bendigo. Nominal capital was £24,000 pounds; shares being £1 . The names of the shareholders and number of shares held, was as follows: Nicholas Jeffrey 9000 shares, James Forde Graham 6000 shares, Joseph Harris, 1500 shares, John Wearne 1500 shares, John H. Hay, 1500 shares, Thomas Grieve 1500 shares, Henry Young 1500 shares, Alfred Wainright 1500 shares. With the exception of Wainwright, all shareholders lived in Eaglehawk. Alfred Wainright gave his address as 'Ireland'. On 23rd August, 1870, William Vinton, Mine Manager, reported that 'during the last fortnight we have crushed 294 loads of stone for 188 ounces 11 dwts of gold; 100 load still on surface, the roads being in such a bad state, we have been unable to cart it to the machine'. At most mines, when the men were below the surface, the men could signal to the driver, but he could not communicate with them. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection.
