In 1943 German internees in camp 3 (Victoria) decided to produce theatre productions of their German heritage to familiaize their children with their culture/to keep everyone busy/ interested/ and involved as a community. A comment was made that this exercise was very successful.Kept the German culture alive in the camp. The camp sites today are on private property, and as they were dismantled after the war, and on the closure of the Migrant camp, very little physical evidence remains today.Camp 3 held 1000 internees, Germans, Jews and Italians, including German Lutheran families from New Guinea, German families from Palestine (Templer settlement) and Austrian Jewish refugees. Interview of three persons, members of the Temple Society, who were arrested in Palestine during World War 2 as "enemy aliens". They were transported to Australia on the "Queen Elizabeth" which was being used at that time, as a troop ship. As part of a group of approximately 650 men, women and children from Palestine,they were held in internment Camp 3, Tatura, from 1941 until 1947. Those internees who chose to remain in Australia after the war were released at such time as they were able to obtain employment and accommodation. Also interviewed is Lurline Knee, Researcher for the Tatura Wartime Camps Museum. This is believed to be the Stuerzenhofecker family who lived in Camp 3. This family lost 2 children whilst in the camp. The first accident occurred when their 2 year old boy, Hartmann (born 11 November 1944), was accidentally run over and killed by an Army truck on the 24 October 1946.A month later their 14 month old daughter, Heimtraut (born 19 September 1945), died of smoke inhalation in a hut fire on the 17 November 1946.Black and white photo of grave sites.
