Part of the Uebergang Collection. Made by the firm of Triaca & Picchi. Camilo Triaca (1887-1972) was a sculptor born Tuscany, Italy. He arrived in Melbourne in 1909 and practised his craft in Richmond, Melbourne, before returning to Italy in 1914 to serve in the Italian Army. He returned to Melbourne in 1923 and continued to sculpt at his Richmond home before relocating to Fitzroy. A 1927 image of workers at his studio workshop taking a lunch break is in the Italian Historical Society collection (http://trove.nla.au/version172106091). The workshop was situated at 76-78 King William St, Fitzroy.Plaster figurine depicting a boat with a girl sitting in the front holding the rope of an anchor and a boy holding the back of the boat which is up on the sand. The inscription "T L" on these early 20th century ladies button-up boots lead to the maker likely to be Tony Lama, a famous USA boot manufacturer, son of Italian immigrants. The "Rome" is the style of boot. The "6" is likely to be the soot size. Tony Lama began work at age 11 years in the leather trade industry, serving an apprenticeship as a shoemaker. He joined the US Cavalry when he was 16, after lying about his age, working as a cobbler to make boots for the soldiers. His workmanship became popular, particularly for the 'Western' style of boot. TONY LAMA boots In 1911 Lama established a company in Texas, first repairing boots, then adapting his shop to manufacture boots in order to meet the many orders he was receiving. He married and he and his wife Esther brought up six children who also went on to work in the family business. The business continued to grow through WWII. Part of the business included custom boot making and Tony's eldest son Joseph presented President Truman with a pair of kangaroo skin boots. The prosperous business became a company and eventually, in 1990, was sold to Justin Industries.This pair of boots is an example of women's footwear dating around the early 20th century. Pair of ladies leather button-up boots. Two-tone style: black bottom strong leather bottom and white, soft kid leather top. Boots have a curved fly fastened by 11 white buttons with metal shanks. Mrs Beth Miller was born in February, 1924 in Latvia. Her family left for Germany after Russian occupation was implemented in Latvia, and eventually sailed for Australia from Naples, Italy in 1949. A working contract and position at the Mayday Hills Mental Hospital brought her to Beechworth, where she settled with her husband and parents. Mrs Miller recounts the daily work in the Mental Hospital during the 1950s, life in Black Spring and the isolation of the immigrant experience. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. These cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Mrs Beth Millers account of her life in Beechworth and the local area during the 20th century is historically and socially significant to the cultural heritage of the region. She gives important insights into the life of post-war European immigrants in the area. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the 20th century, many of which will have now been lost if they had not been preserved.This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. The sash was awarded to G. Lunardelli as the winner of the Senior 20 mile Road Championship for GWCC. Lunardelli came out from Trieste, Italy after World War 11 and worked for the Geelong Water Board. Lunardelli subsequently ceased full time cycling in order to make a living.This award indicates the important influence that immigrants had on the popularity and depth of cycling at the time in the Geelong region.
