John Gibson was a tea merchant in Warrnambool in the 1930's and later went on to run a clothing business in Fairy Street Warrnambool which also involved travelling to areas outside of Warrnambool and district farms with a range of clothing. His wife Mary was associated with the Nella Maris cafe in Liebig St where John Gibson was seriously wounded in a stabbing attack. He and his wife Mary were killed in a road accident in May 1965. It was not uncommon for items such as tea and other basic commodities to be purchased in large amounts. Medal belonged to Joan Grace Gibson (Mitchell) Service numbers: VFX53656 VX53656 VX38752. The Defence Medal was awarded for 6 months service in a prescribed non-operational area subject to enemy air attack or closely threatened in Australia and overseas, 12 months non-operational service in the forces overseas from or outside Australia.Within Australia, the qualifying area was the Northern Territory, north of 14 degrees 30 minutes south, and the Torres Strait Islands. The qualifying period was between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. Overseas service included the Middle East, east of the Suez Canal (less the period of the Syrian Campaign) or Malaya prior to the Japanese invasion on 8 December 1941.The medal is of high significance and should be kept in the collection.The Defence Medal, made from cool-to-touch cupro-nickel, showcases intricate design and engraving details. On the reverse, a Royal Crown rests above a small oak tree growing on land surrounded by water, flanked by two lions as supporters. The inscription '1939 1945' encircles the design, with 'THE DEFENCE MEDAL' in exergue, and the artist's monogram HWP (H. Wilson Parker) subtly placed among the tree roots. The medal’s rim is engraved with 'VFC53656 J.G. GIBSON.' The obverse features the uncrowned effigy of King George VI, facing left, with the initials 'HP' for designer TH Paget beneath the truncated neck. Around the perimeter, the legend reads 'GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX ET INDIAE IMP:', [Latin meaning: 'George VI, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains and Emperor of India.] The ribbon is orange with green outer stripes, each green stripe having a black pin stripe running down the centre. The green represents the Islands of the United Kingdom, the orange represents enemy attacks, and the black represents the black outs. "The Gesture" was an independent organ of the Deaf and Dumb having no direct connection with any single organisation. Its aim was to help all agencies established to promote the advancement of the Deaf and Dumb. The aim was to be the "Voice" of the Deaf and Dumb of Australasia". To educate the public as to the real condition and needs of the afflicted brothers and sisters, to bring prominently before the hearing and speaking community the peculiar difficulties and obstacles that Deaf Mutes have to encounter in the battle of life. The War Medal 1939–45 was awarded for 28 days full-time service in the armed forces between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. Operational and non-operational service may be counted if it was 28 days or more in duration. In the merchant navy, there was a requirement that the 28 days should have been served at sea. A member qualifies for the award where service was brought to an end by death, wounds or other disabilities due to service or by cessation of hostilities on 2 September 1945.The medal is of high significance and should be kept in the collection.Made from cupro-nickel, the medal itself is cool-to-the-touch. The front has a central and textured design of the crowned effigy of King George VI, facing left and signed 'PM', the initials of designer Percy Metcalfe, below the truncated neck of the effigy. Around the perimeter is the legend 'GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX ET INDIAE IMP:' The reverse has a lion standing on a double-headed dragon. The top of the reverse shows the dates 1939 and 1945. The ribbon colours of red, white and blue represent the colours of the Union Flag. The ribbon is tactile, feeling ribbed under finger. MEYER COLLECTION - FALLS CREEK PHOTOS In 1947 a determined group of like-minded State Electricity Commission (SEC) staff including Ray Meyer, the chief surveyor of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, had a common interest that revolved around the skiing potential of the snow-covered high plains which included what is now the resort of Falls Creek. The six SEC employees, Toni St Elmo, Ray Meyer, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson (together with their families) banded together to secretly build a 'hut' that was the first ski lodge at Falls Creek. Using a road built in 1930s to gain access to Falls Creek, their hut project was carried out in secret as efforts by other skiers were blocked by H.H.C. Williams – the engineer in charge of the Hydro Scheme. In 1946 Ray Meyer made a trip to the Lands Office in Melbourne. He came away with a 99-year lease on three acres that was ideally suited for a hut designed by Lloyd Dunn. Adrian Ruffenacht (Design Engineer for the KHS) had suggested where the group should build because of easy access to a spring for water. Much of the building material required was scavenged from derelict huts on the high plains. Due to the need for secrecy, the determined group worked on the hut in the evenings and weekends to avoid detection. During the building period the group had met at Echidna Rock (now known as Eagle Rock) where Skippy St Elmo announced, "This is my favourite ‘Skyline’.” And so the first lodge in the area at Falls Creek Ski Resort came into existence. With the development of the International Poma in the 1970s, the Skyline Lodge, which was sited between the ski-lift’s pole one and pole two, was demolished. However, the legacy of Ray Meyer, Toni St Elmo, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson and Skyline lives on in the vibrant atmosphere of Falls Creek Resort. The MEYER COLLECTION documents developments on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme and their life at Falls Creek from the mid 1930s to 1960s.These images are significant because they depict aspects of the life of a pioneering family of Falls Creek and the founders of "Skyline", the first lodge at Falls Creek.A black and white image "Building Skyline" L-R:- R.L. The monument commemorates those from Avoca who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It was dedicated on18 November 1921. The memorial was later rededicated in 1988 to also remember those who served in the Second World War. During the First World War, 137 men from the Avoca area volunteered for the armed services and of this number 29 were killed. A plaque, unveiled in 1984, commemorates Sergeant Lewis McGee V.C who enlisted from Avoca in World War One. Colour photograph of the Avoca World War One.
