A history of the first sixty years of the Emerald and District Co-operative Society, written by Jo Jenkinson, Emerald Museum, at the invitation of Paul Frisk, Chairman of Directors. Based on new bulletins issued by the Co-op, minutes of Directors' meetings and AGMs, and personal memories of former employees of the Co-op. The Co-op was founded by farmers in the Emerald district in 1944-45, and had an important influence on farming and general development in the district in itsw early years. The Emerald co-operative society was formed at a meeting at the Emerald Mechanics Institute on 9 December 1944, those present agreed that the solution to a shortage of stock feed caused by the privations of World War II was to form a co-operative society in Emerald. Jack Eudey was elected Chairman, Horrie Wardle was appointed Secretary, and Jack Hirst Manager.This record holds historic significance to Emerald as it shows the history of both the Emerald Co-operative society and the Lumeh guest house.
