The Mundy (father) and McCole (mother) families were early settlers in the Jarrahmond/Orbost area. These children are engaged in a serious game of childhood -- driving their own small bullock team of young calves. The small bullock yokes across the calves necks have been made by the children's father, Jack Mundy. Note: Item 420, a small yoke, (thought to be one of the yokes in photograph 3354), is on display in the Slab Hut in Orbost. This photograph is significant because it is both historic and rare. It shows an aspect of the more serious play of childhood, in this case, practicing driving a small team of calves on the childrens' farm at Jarrahmond. It is also significant because it relates to another item in the collection, Item 430. A b/w photograph under glass in a brown wooden frame. The photograph shows a house in the right background and two children with 4 calves in the foreground. The larger boy is wearing a hat, holding a whip, and is standing near four calves hitched to a sled with milk or cream cans on the shed. A smaller child is standing near the sled. The photograph has pieces torn from around the edges. On a piece of cardboard attached to the photograph: Jack and Fred Mundy On Walter & Sarah (McCole) Mundy's property 5 miles lup the 'B' Road, Jarrahmond. 1913-1915farming, calves, mundy, childhood, jarrahmond, orbost -

It was made by Fred Mundy of Jarrahmond for his children to play at being bullock drivers with their calves. Note: photograph 3354 of Jack and Fred Mundy and their team of 4 calves. Yokes like this one were key components used to control bullock teams. These teams were very important in Australia during the 19th century, hauling heavy loaded wagons of goods to remote settlements and rural produce to cities and ports over rough unmade roads. The bullocks were yoked together in pairs. Chains joined the yoked pairs. A heavy wooden bullock yoke with only one metal collar. One is missing. The fittings are iron. There is a small leather patch tacked on to one end. The yoke is made from a length of wood of roughly rectangular cross-section. It has been shaped to form curved depressions that allow it to rest across the necks of two bullocks and yoke them together. bullock-yokes transport -

The celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24 was renamed Empire Day in 1903 after her death in 1901. It was celebrated throughout the British Empire culminating in fireworks and bonfires in the evening. Empire Day was first introduced in 1905 to promote loyalty among the dominion countries of the British Empire. (from https://dictionaryofsydney.org/event/empire_day) Celebrated on 24 May, Queen Victoria's birthday, it was directed especially at school children. Teachers were encouraged to promote special steps to develop a feeling of pride in the British Empire and the achievements of the British race. Often a morning of short addresses, recitations and patriotic songs such as 'Rule Britannia' and 'Advance Australia' was followed by a half-day holiday to mark the celebration of Australia's strong ties to the British Empire.
