This is a set of 16 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo by the Commander 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on the 23rd and 24th of October 1989. In this set BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC was taken on a tour through the orthophoto production area. In photos .1P to .3P and .6P BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC presented a productivity award to CO LTCOL John Winzar in Fortuna’s Ballroom. LTCOL Winzar was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1987 to 1989. The WILD OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation featuring in photos .7P to.10P and .12P to .14P was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. Photos .15P and .16P feature contractors preparing the foundations for the construction of Lithographic Squadron’s new Printing Building at Fortuna, Bendigo. The building was purpose built to house a new computer-controlled Heidelberg Speedmaster five colour lithographic offset Printing Press. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. This is a set of 18 photographs taken at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR) Officers Mess Ball held at the Fortuna Villa on the 17th of February 1990. Photos of personnel and their guests were taken on their arrival in the gardens at the front of the main building. The 3rd Military District Band provided the music. The formal photos were taken in Fortuna Villa’s cupola stairwell. Not seen in these photos is a set of small leadlight windows located above the main windows with four words – EAST WEST HOME BEST taken from an old phrase ‘East or West, Home is Best’. The Dinner was held at the rear of Fortuna Villa in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. The dance was held in the Ballroom on the top floor of Fortuna Villa with a civilian show band providing the music. The ASR’s Catering Corps, contractors and RASvy Other Ranks performed catering, stewarding and kitchen hand duties. As a senior officer of field rank (Colonel or above) led the funeral procession, it is presumed the unknown deceased soldier was also a highly ranked field officer. This is a set of five black & white photographs of troops from the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment undertaking ceremonial drill at the military funeral for SSGT Peter Dew in 1977. The location of the funeral service was at Fortuna, Bendigo. He was buried at Bendigo Cemetery in Quarry Hill. Peter Dew died in a tragic accident at home. He was fondly remembered as one of Lithographic Squadron’s colourful personalities. See item 6243.7P for photos of Peter Dew at work in Lithographic Squadron. The "Super Animal of the Year" Peter Dew Memorial Award was an award presented to a member of the squadron for a crude act. The Summer Ball was one of the last large scale formal functions held at Fortuna Villa before ASR’s closure the following year. Photos of personnel and their guests was taken on their arrival near the Pompeii Fountain in the gardens at the front of the main building. The Ball and Dinner was held at the rear of Fortuna Villa in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment on the 20th of April 1970. The unit was granted for the first time the privilege of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The Freedom of Entry Parade occurred on the 14th of June 1970 led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bill Sprenger MID, MBE; the unit marched up View St in the CBD to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Jeffrey and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. A ceremonial scroll was presented to the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment citing the occasion and was proudly displayed in the entry foyer to Fortuna Villa up to October 2008. The Regiment continued to exercise its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1992 and 1996.These black and white and colour photographs of the AHQ Survey Regiment were taken on the occasion of the Freedom of Entry parade to the City of Bendigo on the 14th of June 1970. It’s evident in these photos there was also a technical tour for dignitaries through the production areas in Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons. It is known an Open Day coincided with the Freedom of Entry to the City Parade, an honour that was conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the AHQ Survey Regiment and held on the 14th of June 1970. These five photographs of the Komori Newkoni Printing Press were probably taken circa 1980s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. The photos are not annotated except for .4P. The Komori Newkoni Printing Press was a four-colour offset press. It was one of the replacements for the George Mann Printing Presses, however improvements to productivity were not realised as it was unreliable, was very cramped between decks and there were safety concerns for the operators. This lithographic printing machine built by Komori Printing Machinery Co., Ltd in Japan. This is a set of 24 photographs taken on a CO’s Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 1st of October 1990. Wearing of non-prescription sunglasses by most personnel on the parade was normally not permitted. On this occasion they wore sunglasses as a prank halfway through the parade, given MAJ Burns at this time began wearing sunlight-sensitive photochromic glasses and was the inspecting officer, rather than the CO LTCOL Rene van den Tol. Field Trip Preparations - Tellurometer traverse, Wyndham, Western Australia to Borroloola, Northern Territory 1960. This was a Tellurometer Traverse undertaken to establish 1st order EDM traverse (geodetic survey of Australia) from Mt Isa to Borroloola with airborne barometric altimetry in the Camooweal area. Laplace Astro carried out as a separate activity from Camooweal, working north to Borroloola and east to Richmond. Also ‘Leap-frog’ barometer heighting from Croydon to Esmeralda closing on State BM at Croydon. Base camps were established at Camooweal for the traverse and Georgetown for the map control and annotation. Bilby towers were used on the coastal section of the EDM traverse, east and south of Borroloola. Vehicles used were Austin Champs (with Rolls Royce engines) and Humber one-ton trucks with Landrovers used for first time on a field trip. These photocopies tell the story of the initial tasking for the Australian Survey Corps to assist with the surveying for the Snowy River Diversion Surveys that was to become one of the largest National Developments within Australia "The Snowy River Hydro Electric Scheme". The role that the Australian Survey Corps would perform for National Development Projects was just being developed with the post WWII capability and manpower. The initial Surveys conducted by the Australian Survey Corps were significant in preliminary planning that allowed the project to proceed. These directives were written by Colonel L. Fitzgerald, OBE in July 1946 who was Director of the Australian Survey Corps from June 1942 – January 1960 where he directed The LHQ Cartographic Coy (Bendigo) to Photogrammetrically plot detail of the Kosciusko 1 Mile sheet area and for 5 Fd Survey Coy (Chatswood, Sydney) to establish horizontal and vertical control. It also required the Deputy Assistant Director of Military Survey, Eastern Command, at Victoria Barracks in Sydney to liaise with the NSW Lands Dept for existing control. Both the DAD of Military Survey Lt. Col. HPG Clews and the OC Major H.F. Eggeling were to go onto serve with the Snowy Mountains Authority (SMA) both significantly contributing to the success of the project. This extract is from the book “The Major” Lt. Col. Hugh Powell Gough Clews by Noel R Gough which can be found on the Survey Corps web site "rasvy.org.au/History" "When the war ended 2nd Field Survey Coy was broken up. Clews had already been promoted to the position of Deputy Assistant Director of Military Survey, Eastern Command, at Victoria Barracks in Sydney. Late in 1945, I (John Cavill) was posted to 5 Fd Svy Coy at Chatswood in Sydney, under the command of Major H.F. Eggeling: the same Major "Bert" Eggeling who was to become, in 1949, the Chief Surveyor and creator of the Survey Branch of the Snowy Mountains Authority. Clews joined the SMA in January 1950; I (John Cavill) followed in April the same year. It is unfortunate that, because of some confusion over the title "Major", a myth has grown up (outside Snowy circles) that Clews was in charge of all the surveys on the Snowy. The existence of that myth does great injustice to the other "Major"; the one that designed, set up and ran the branch through the most difficult first four years of its existence: Major Bert Eggeling." These eight photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Headquarter (AHQ) Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Laverton circa 1961. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cricket, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. This collection of 19 black and white photographs was taken at the Five Nation Mapping, Charting & Geodesy (MC&G) Conference, held at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo from the 9th to 11th of September 1980. Directors (or their representatives) from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States of America military mapping agencies attended Five Nations MC&G Conference. Identifiable attendees were MAJ GEN William L. Nicholson III - D-DMA (USA), MAJ GEN Eric W Barton CB - Director of Military Survey (UK) and COL NRJ Hillier - D-SVY (AUS). It is apparent from the background of the photos that they were taken in the Army Survey Regiment’s Officers/SGTs Mess Dining Room.
