A recording made by H.R.H. Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh for Legacy Week in 1973 so that could be broadcast on TV. 1973 was the 50th Anniversary of Legacy. The text of the Prince's television message is: 'This is the 50th Anniversary of the foundation of Legacy which grew from some 14 members in Melbourne to more than 6,000 throughout Australia and now looks after 85,000 widows and 34,000 children of deceased ex-servicemen. This is a remarkable achievement and I think that Legacy is well known all over Australia for the very valuable work which it does for the widows of ex-servicemen and their children. I think that people have gone off to war and they have sacrificed themselves for things they believe in but they are always anxious, most anxious, about the people that they leave behind - their wives and their children. It's possible, of course, to set cup Government organisation to look after them, and to provide for them, but it needs something more than that. It needs the relationship which has gone because the father is no longer there and this is really the purpose of Legacy - to provide that essential personal element in looking after the widows of the men who went off to war and their children. The Jubilee of this church was held in 1933. "Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church. BALLARAT, Sunday Jubilee celebrations of the Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church were well attended in the week end. A basket picnic on Saturday at Eureka Stockade reserve was followed at night by a social gathering, at which a birthday cake was cut by Mrs. Amor, a foundation member. On Sunday special services were led by Rev. J. A. Moscript, assisted by the young men of St. John's Church. The church was originally founded, by the late Mrs. J. P. Murray to mission to the needs of the busy mining community which existed in Canadian in early years." (The Age, 06 November 1933.) PATON MEMORIAL CHURCH - An interesting tree-planting ceremony was performed in the grounds of the Paton Memorial Church on Saturday lost. Trees were put in by the scholars of the Sunday school to commemorate the enlistment of all the boys who had in any way been connected with the church. Sunday school, and Young Men's Club. The Mayor (Cr Levy) spoke in terms of praise of the lads who had enlisted to fight for right against might and the tyranny of Prussian militarism. The Hon. R. McGregor MLA., and the Revs. A. H. Moore and W. Rowlands were among those present. on also Mesdames J. P. Murray and McGowan, two of the founders of the church. During the afternoon Cr Levy planted a tree in honor of Mrs Murray. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the congregation. (The Age, 06 November 1933.) This church was in the middle of a Chinese neighbourhood, and the 1800s the leprosarium was in the vicinity. A pair of cufflinks with the Legacy symbol. It is not known if they were produced to sell during Badge Week or whether they were are gifts to Legatees or former Junior Legatees. The badge of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. Diamond jubilee cufflinks were issued for Legatees to purchase in 1983. Wreath laying ceremony for Legacy widows at the Cenotaph at the Shrine of Remembrance. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The photos show President David Ford carrying a wreath to be laid in the Garden Courtyard. The plants in the Garden Courtyard have been selected because they are native to the Mediterranean countries in which Australians have served. The olive tree planted by Legacy in 1972 was relocated to the new courtyard as part of the Shrine redevelopment. It stands as a centrepiece, representing peace. This is the olive tree of peace that was planted by Legacy in 1973 to mark their golden jubilee. It was relocated to the new courtyard in 2002 when the Shrine was being redeveloped. An event at the Shrine of Remembrance Visitor Centre, the guests include some youths and Ron Barassi. Afterwards they posed for a photo in the Garden Courtyard. The president is George McKenzie. Ron Barassi participated in several Legacy events over the years. Ron was a a junior legatee after his father Ron Snr was killed in action at Tobruk in World War II, aged 27. The Visitor Centre was completed in 2003 and provides unimpeded access for the elderly and disabled to the Sanctuary, the Crypt and the Galleries of Remembrance as well as open space for exhibitions and events.
