As an Old Collegian Ken also served on the Ballarat College Council 1950-73 and the Ballarat Clarendon College Council 1974-84 (Chairman 1976-84). The K D Baird Boatshed is named in his honour, as were the rowing boats the Ken Baird 1963 and the Ken Baird II in 2003. This cup was awarded to Kenneth Darnton Watson when he was a boarder and competitive rower whilst completing his secondary education. Kenneth Darnton Watson was born at Bendigo on 24 May 1893 to George Darnton Watson and Adelaide Nora Holmes. He was educated at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, being selected as School Captain in 1913 and a member of the Head of the River rowing team. After finishing school, he worked as a jackaroo on Wanganella Station and later at Mt. Widderin, Skipton, Victoria. When WW1 was declared, Kenneth enlisted and after initial training at Maribyrnong, Victoria he left Australia as 2nd Lieutenant with 7th Australian Field Artillery Brigade, to disembark at Plymouth on July 10, 1916. He took part in the Battles of Messines, Menin Road, Polygon Wood and Passchendaele Ridge in 1917. For his efforts in Passchendaele Ridge on 17th December he was awarded the Military Cross "for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty." In 1918 he took part in the Battles of Villers-Bretonneux, Hamel and Amiens. He returned to Australia in November 1919 and was discharged on 20th January 1920. In 1922, Kenneth Darnton Watson came to Wodonga where he purchased de Kerilleau Homestead, consisting of 2,500 acres, from Mr George Gordon. The two storey brick homestead had been built by William Huon in 1870. On 30th May 1924, he married Phyllis Emily Lenore Austin and they had four children, Ian Darnton 1925, Robert Darnton 1926 Rosemary McPherson 1929 and Faith Holmes 1931. On the land Kenneth worked hard, building fences, cattle, sheep and horse yards, and farmed Corriedale sheep, Shorthorn cattle and horses. he was an innovative farmer, introducing modern methods of top dressing at de Kerilleau by means of an aircraft. He was also a dedicated community man. He was a member of both Albury and Wodonga Show Committees, Murray Valley Development League, No.1 Region, Graziers' Association of Southern Riverina, Albury Legacy Club, Wodonga RSL, and Wodonga Turf Club including terms as President on several of these organisations. Kenneth was also a Warden of St. Luke's Church of England, Wodonga. Kenneth served as Wodonga Shire President from 1929 to 1931, and was again elected to Council from 1943 to 1945. A most respected and valued member of the local community, Kenneth Darnton Watson died on the 4th of October 1951, aged 58. Lenore Watson lived at de Kerilleau until her death on 15th June 1984. Both are buried in Wodonga.These images are significant because they record the service of a prominent member of the Wodonga community.A silver mug awarded to K D Watson as a rowing trophy in April 1909. The furriers Keitel were established in Australia early in the Twentieth Century. The business was initially in Port Melbourne in Beach Street and later in Lt Collins Street, Melbourne. In 1916, 1918, 1924, and 1927 there were newspaper reports of robberies at the business; an indication of the monetary value of furs in the past. There was an interesting connection to Jewish refugees to Australia reported in Australian newspapers in 1939, which relates to the Keitel family. OFFICER'S WIDOW A REFUGEE MELBOURNE, Wednesday. - A widow, whose husband was killed in action while a German officer in the Great, War, reached Melbourne in the Marella, a refugee from Nazi Germany. She is Mrs L. Fuchs, and on the wharf she met her, brother, Mr K. Feitel, a Melbourne furrier, for the first time in 40 years. Another, brother, Mr I. Feitel, travelled with her from Vienna. Mr I Feitel is a watchmaker, and has been in the business in Australia for about 50 years. He has brought with him an agency to establish here, for the well-known Swiss watchmaking company, Chaux-de-fonds. ESCAPED INTO HOLLAND. Having escaped from Germany into Holland, 80 refugees brought to Australia in the Marella were taken by Dutch ships to Batavia, where they Joined the Marella. Seven landed in Brisbane, 40 in Sydney, and 33 in Melbourne. There was only a few British subjects in the ship. The Jewish refugees include a cattle breeder, a lawyer for a Viennese bank, dentists, clothing , manu facturers, machinery experts, and general merchants. Cameron Stewart Baird, VC, MG was a soldier in the Australian Army who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in Afghanistan. Cameron enlisted on 4/1/2000 and was posted to the 4th Battalion (Commando) RAR now known as the 2nd Commando Regiment. He was deployed on 7 operations including Operation TANAGER - Timor Leste in 2001 Operation BASTILLE and FALCONER - Iraq in 2003. Cameron resigned from the ADF in 2004 re enlisting in 2006 and again posted to 2nd Commando Regiment. In 2007 he was promoted to Lance Corporal and deployed on Operation SLIPPER - Afghanistan. He was awarded the Medal for Gallantry. In 2008 he was promoted to Corporal and deployed again on Operation SLIPPER in 2009 2011 and 2013. This book comes from the property of Lyndoch near the mouth of the Hopkins River. George Rolfe, a tea merchant from Melbourne, established Lyndoch in 1875 and Miss Florence Lake, daughter of Miss Annie Lake, later Mrs George Rolfe, inherited the property with her sister Annie. In 1920 Florence Lake built a large house called Lyndoch. She had a Rolls Royce car and a chauffeur and was a tireless worker for local charities. Florence Lake died in 1946 and the property became the site of an Aged Care Facility in Warrnambool. Florence Lake’s house now forms part of the hostel section of this facility. This book would have been in the Lyndoch library during Florence Lake’s time there. D K Broster ( Dorothy Kathleen) was a popular writer of historical novels in the early part of the 20th century. The Flight of the heron being her most acclaimed This book is of interest as it came from the historically-important property and house known as Lyndoch and so it is connected to Miss Florence Lake, a prominent person in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 439 pages. It has a red cover with black lettering on the front and spine. It also has a dust cover which has a colour image of a man in late 18th century attire and a shield containing a yellow poppy. The dust cover is partly torn away. The book has 46 chapters. Councilor James Baird was elected as a member of the first Ballarat Shire Council in 1863 becoming the first Shire President for 1863-64,and was on council until 1865.He was then re-elected to council in1868 until 1887.He then served three more terms as President 1874-75 ,1875-76, and 1879-80.This original photo is of the first President of the newly formed Ballarat Shire. On 16th November (monday)1863, it was declared that the Ballarat Road Board District to be a Shire known as the Shire of Ballarat.This document was signed and sealed by Colonial Governor Charles H.Darling. The declaration was published in The Government Gazette on tuesday 24th November 1863.
