The Printing office of the 'Evelyn Observer' at Kangaroo Ground operated from about 1872 until it became the 'Advertiser' and moved to Hurstbridge during the 1914-1918 war. Ewen Hugh Cameron (1831- 27 September 1915) was born at Kilmonivaig, Inverness Scotland. He migrated to Melbourne in “The Hurricane” in 1853 and in 1855 tried his luck at the newly-opened Andersons Creek Goldfield. Two years later he was appointed first postmaster at Warrandyte and ran the store there. In 1863 he took up the 100 acre farm “Pigeon Bank” at Kangaroo Ground where he lived until his death. In 1874 Cameron was elected as the Member for Evelyn in the Victorian Legislative Assembly and held the seat until he retired in 1914 as “Father of the House”. He held a number of ministerial and other important Parlimentary positions. The most notable was Chairman of the Railways Standing Committee, which was responsible for much of the Railway development in Victoria. Concurrently with his Parliamentary career, he was a member of the Eltham Roads Board and later Council for more than 50 years. In 1867 he married Agnes Bell, a daughter of Kangaroo Ground pioneers. View from Shire of Eltham War Memorial tower at Garden Hill, Kangaroo Ground, probably taken shortly after the memorial's re-dedication held 8 Nov. 1951. On November 11th 1926 the Shire of Eltham War Memorial Tower at Kangaroo Ground was opened. It is regarded as one of Melbourne’s most outstanding lookout towers. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future. Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars. From: Historic items for Diamond Valley Community Radio September 1990 (EDHS collection) On November 8th, 1951, the memorial was re-dedicated by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Dallas Brookes with the addition of the names of men from the Shire of Eltham who fell in the Second World War. Stevenson, Robert, Kangaroo Ground, was born in the County of Evelyn, Victoria in 1845, He is the son of the late Joseph Stevenson and retains the property purchased by his father, with 47 acres adjoining, making in all 127 acres, where he carries on farming, and also a vineyard, the grapes from which have taken a number of prizes at agricultural societies’ shows at Heidelberg and other places. Kangaroo Ground pioneers James Johnston (died 1895) with his wife Elizabeth commenced building this stone house on his Pretty Hill property, Kangaroo Ground in 1842. It was one of the oldest homes in the district till 1938 when new owner Mr Percy Cope, a master builder demolished the old building and a new brick building was erected in its place. Home built prior to 1860 for Francis Rogerson and later owned by Ewen Cameron who was the local Parliamentarian. In 1971 it was home of Mr. and Mrs. Menzies Jackson. The home is listed on the Victorian Heritage Database. William Bell was born in Scotland and arrived aboard the 'David Clark' October 1839 and settled at Kangaroo Ground. Died at "Hitchill" Kangaroo Ground (now Seven Oaks) "Mary Ann Bell - Yarra Flats, a native of Scotland, born in 1834, came to Australia with her parents in 1841. Her husband, the late Mr. William Bell (born in 1831) came to Australia in 1839, and was on the Diamond Creek diggings for a few years. About 1851, Mr Bell went to Yarra Flats and purchased a station of 640 acres, where he carried on grazing and farming until his death in 1877, when he was buried in the Yarra Flats cemetery. ..
