... It is a railway only bridge which runs over the Maribyrnong River between Sunshine North and Keilor East....It is a railway only bridge which runs over the Maribyrnong River between Sunshine North and Keilor East. Photograph Maribyrnong railway bridge construction ...One man lost his life during the building of this bridge. The bridge was constructed by the Victorian Railways between 1927 to 1929 to carry a new double track goods line. This enabled trains from all parts of the state except Gippsland to have direct access to the Tottenham marshalling and sorting yards. These yards were constructed in the 1920's to relieve congestion in the Melbourne Yard near Spencer Street station. The congestion was being caused by the construction of suburban passenger platforms associated with the electrification of the suburban railway network. Initially the bridge was for goods trains but during the Second World War it was also used by troop trains. When the standard gauge line was built in 1962 all trains to Albury and Sydney have used this route, thus avoiding travelling through Essendon and Pascoe Vale on the suburban tracks. The standard gauge track across the bridge took the place of one of the broad gauge tracks so broad gauge trains crossing the bridge in either direction have to now use the same track. The bridge is 1,257 feet (383.13 metres) long and 180 feet (54.86 metres) above the water level. It is just 63 feet (19.2 metres) short of a quarter mile in length between abutments. There is a similar bridge on the same railway line crossing the Moonee Ponds Creek between Gowenbrae and Glenroy, however it is smaller at 1060 feet (323.08 metres) length and 115 feet (35.05) height. The bridge is now Victorian Heritage Registered under Number: H1197, and Heritage Overlay Numbers HO5, and HO107. On the Heritage Register it is named RAIL BRIDGE (ALBION VIADUCT). According to the Heritage Report the bridge is scientifically and architecturally important because of its large size, and because of the cost effective design features such as two girders per span (one for each track), the K bracing in the towers, and the broad flange beams as columns. When it was being built it was the largest trestle bridge in Australia, and until the Sydney Harbour bridge was constructed it was the highest railway bridge.449.01 - Maribyrnong railway bridge construction.jpg 449.02 - Maribyrnong railway bridge construction.jpg 449.03 - Maribyrnong railway bridge construction.jpg 449.04 - Maribyrnong railway bridge construction.jpg 449.05 - Maribyrnong railway bridge construction.jpgmaribyrnong river, bridge, quarter mile bridge, trestle bridge -

The Sydenham cairn was erected on 19 December 1924, exactly 100 years after the explorers passed through the district. It was built by residents of St Albans and Sydenham as part of a statewide centenary program that installed 37 monuments along the expedition route. The monument has been moved twice due to road works as it was originally on the north‑west corner of Taylors Road & Sydenham Road. The first time it was relocated it was moved to position very close to the original position. The second time it was moved approximately 200 metres in a southerly direction and is now located at the Keilor Plains Station (East Esplanade). In November 2024, the Sydenham & District Historical Society held a 100‑year anniversary event for the cairn and a 200‑year anniversary of the 1824 expedition. The Braybrook Roads Board and Shire of Braybrook were the earliest form of local government for the entire district that later became Sunshine, and its jurisdiction originally stretched all the way west to Toolern Creek near present‑day Melton. ... Keilor and St Albans — the two suburbs that border it. Alie Missen's document captures a brief history of the area from the early days of being a pastoral district, to today, a modern suburb. Kealba History St. Albans East ...Kealba is a suburb of Brimbank City Council, but prior to the Victorian Council amalgamations in 1994, Kealba was a suburb of City of Keilor. The Principal Mr. Leo Webb of the local St. Albans Park High School, requested a name change to the school to avoid confusion with the nearby St. Albans High School. A community group was formed to rename the school and the surrounding area. In 1970, the name Kealba was chosen. The name is a portmanteau of Keilor and St Albans — the two suburbs that border it.Alie Missen's document captures a brief history of the area from the early days of being a pastoral district, to today, a modern suburb.Just a Little Historykealba, history, st. albans east -

The land donated was located on the south side of Boundary Road (Now Main Road East), which was the border between the Shire of Braybrook and the Shire of Keilor, In reality, the community was one, and Alice intended the land provide recreation facilities for both the Shire of Braybrook and the Shire of Keilor residents. In 1929, the reserve trustees decided to vest the land to the Shire of Braybrook Council due to ongoing rate costs, liability for road construction costs and the need for formal municipal management. The memorial wrought iron gates were added later and are one of the few early memorials in St Albans that have a tangible link to the pioneer era of the district. Over the years the reserve has seen various landscaping design changes, and various sporting club rooms and community buildings added. This photograph taken in 1993, captures the planting of a Canary Island tree in the reserve to reflect the 1920's - 1940's civic planting trends. As of the 8th January 2026 this tree is still alive and growing in the reserve. Errington Reserve is one of the few reserves created by a private donation, and one of the earliest examples of a woman shaping public space in the St. Albans district.5658 - Errington Reserve Palm Tree Planting (Sun Adv 203.3) 1993 Photo 02.JPGmain road east, st. albans, errington reserve, alice errington -

Over the years this hall hosted: - Church congregations - Concerts, dances, picture shows - Public meetings and fundraisers - Birthday and wedding functions - WW2 training activities - Citizenship ceremonies - The St Albans Infant Welfare Centre - The Public Library In 1956, the original timber hall built in 1906 was replaced with this brick building. The Victorian Heritage Database describes the new hall as: - A cream‑brick, shop‑front style building - With glazed tiles and a frosted glass entry - A long, narrow hall seating around 100 people - Cavity brick walls, steel truss roof, corrugated iron cladding - Interior lined with fibrous plaster and timber composite panels This modest scale reflects the small population and the low priority St Albans received from the Keilor‑focused council at the time.
