Document - ADDRESS TO MRS C HEINZ, May 1896
Conrad Heinz (1846-13/2/1896) was born in Germany and came to Australia aged 15. He married Franziska Ingelfinger in 1866. He established the Happy Valley Butchers shop in 1872 with his two brothers. This continued to expand and eventually moved to Korong Road. He was patron of the Bendigo Athletics Club and was elected unopposed to the Barkly Ward of the Bendigo council in 1892 and served as Mayor and Chief Magistrate in 1894. He died of cancer of the knee after preferring Chinese traditional medicines rather than the advised amputation.Address to Mrs. C. Heinz. Dear Madam. Three page handwritten document transcribed by Albert Richardson. On top of document: The Victoria Reef, Victoria Spurs, East Victoria Reef, Try McWell Reef and the Hercules Reef. Reference Dickers Mining Record, Vol 1, No. 1 Page g. November 23, 1861. Document details the location of the reef lines and some of the mines and claims along them. For example, page one: 'The main Victoria, really a continuation of the South Victoria, commences at a point to the west of the Mt Korong Road, where the high portion of the ranges is intersected by the head of the Iron Bark Gully, the southern most claim being Ballerstedt and Son's. Document - GARDEN GULLY UNITED MINE - GARDEN GULLY UNITED FIRE
Hand written notes on the fire at the Garden Gully United Mine 29/3/1911. Two reports from the Bendigo Advertiser 29 and 30 March 1911. First report battery watchman John Davey saw nothing unusual, then later saw the reflection of fire in the engine house. Second report mentions hose stretched over Mt Korong Rd being run over by Chinese market gardeners and others making the leaky hose leak all the more. Cages only travelled a short distance after the ropes broke. Unemployment after air compressors ruined by the fire. Written on the back: Some Facts and Figures - The Bendigo Goldfield has had its good and bad years.
