This is a set of two photographs of a visit to the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna. Bendigo in 1966, by MAJ GEN Taylor, GOC Southern Command. He was escorted by the CO - LTCOL Frank Buckland OBE, MID. LTCOL Frank Buckland OBE, MID was the CO of the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1962 to 1965. After promotion to Colonel, he was appointed as Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from March 1967 to August 1972. COL Buckland OBE, MID was promoted to Brigadier (retired) to the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1973 to January 1976. These 11 x black and white photographs were taken at a farewell to the retiring RSM WO1 Aubrey Harvey on the 1st of March 1982 at the Fortuna Villa flag pole Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. The RSM handover also occurred that day. This set of 18 photographs were taken at a Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo in July 1987. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL Don Swiney MBE, and the Reviewing Officer was the Colonel Commandant (honorary appointment) of the Survey Corps - COL Clem Sargent (Retd). The Corps Day Parade was held to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. These photos comprise inspections of the Regiment’s four squadrons, presentations of the Defence Force Service Medal in recognition of 15 years of efficient remunerated service to SSGT Phil Meagher and SGT Wayne Rothwell; and formal group photos of each of the four Squadrons, Officers, and Warrant Officers/Sergeants. This is a set of 14 photographs of a visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 5th of June 1979 by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB. He was accompanied by his wife. They were escorted through the production areas of the Army Survey Regiment by the CO LTCOL Bob Skitch. Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB was an esteemed Australian Army officer, who was CGS from 1977 to 1982. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, he was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980. Also featuring in these photos is MAJ Peter Eddy, who was the OC of Air Survey Squadron. He was later promoted to LTCOL and was CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1981 to 1982. The photos were taken next to the flagpole in Fortuna Villa’s front garden. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB; was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. On this occasion the CGS presented the Defence Force Service Medal to WO2 Alex Cairney, WO1 Bob Mason and WO2 Ken Slater for 15 years of efficient remunerated service in the Australian Army. It is likely the unidentified UK Exchange senior NCO was the recipient of the UK Army’s equivalent service medal. Other key staff appearing in these photos are LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980 and WO1 Aub Harvey, who was RSM from 1976 to 1982. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1980 was the third time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Paul Tomkinson and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995.These black and white photographs of the Army Survey Regiment were taken on the occasion of the Freedom of Entry parade to the City of Bendigo in 1980. It’s evident in these photos he was taken on a tour through the production areas in Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons. Jim Killen served in the RAAF in WW2 and later had an illustrious career in politics. After receiving his knighthood and an AC for service to Australia, he was known as Sir Denis James "Jim" Killen, AC, KCMG. This set of 36 photographs were taken at a Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo on the 1st of July 1987. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL Don Swiney MBE, and the Reviewing Officer was the Colonel Commandant (honorary appointment) of the Survey Corps - COL Clem Sargent (Retd). The Corps Day Parade was held to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. It was an occasion for great celebration at the Regiment. After 45 years in Bendigo, its future was finally secure. At the traditional anniversary parade, the Colonel Commandant COL Clem Sargent praised the efforts of the Regiment and led the soldiers in three cheers for the record production of the previous 12 months. This is a set of seven colour and black and white photographs of Army Survey Regiment’s Australian Rules football team – the Fortuna Lions aka “Fortuna Fumblers”, taken at Seymour and Bendigo Victoria in 1983. The Fortuna Lions competed in the Puckapunyal Area Football Association for several years from 1978 to 1984 and in 1983, fielded a great team it managed to reach the Grand Final. Held at the neutral ground at Kings Park, Seymour, the match was an incredibly exciting and bruising contest played in damp conditions and ended in a draw. Dave Lawler’s spectacular mark was a highlight. Due to heavy rain during the following week, the Grand Final replay was held the following week in even heavier conditions. The Fortuna Lions prevailed in the replay with an emphatic victory. The team’s leaders were Eddie Jacobs (coach), Rhys De Laine (captain), Greg Else (vice-captain), and Ken Slater (manager). The Bi Annual Planning Conferences were to plan and coordinate the activities of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. These photographs of a presentation to a charity organisation were taken in the grounds of Fortuna Villa, Army Survey Regiment in c1982. SPR Gae (Robinson) Amato was the unit’s first Miss Golden North entrant in the Miss Australia Quest. LTCOL Peter Eddy and SPR Amato presented a fundraising cheque to the unidentified representative from the Spastic Society. These photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The scoreboard in the background in photo .11P indicated an emphatic victory for the Army Survey Regiment.This is a set of 13 photographs of Flag Day, Army Survey Regiment versus the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. This is a set of 35 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment personnel undertaking military skills revision, at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, 1985. They participated in lessons on the handling of the M30 Grenade and SLR Rifle. These lessons were part of the six objectives of regimental training outlined in the administrative instruction – Exercise “City Soldier” accompanying these photos. The other objectives were first aid at Fortuna, RATEL and navigation at Wellsford Forest; and rifle shooting at Wellsford Rifle Range.
