The Ladies Benevolent Society was started in 1927 under the auspices of the Lady Mayoress and Councillors' wives to aid the wives and families of the poor and unemployed in times of need. In those days there was very little social support. CLUNES LADIES BENEVOLENT SOCIETY PRESENTED ITS' 84TH ANNUAL MEETING ON JULY 27TH, 1949, AND DISBANDED 18TH FEBRUARY 1957 WHEN PROVISIONS WERE MADE BY THE GOVERNMENT IN AGED PENSIONS AND CHILD ENDOWMENT.
