This beaded dress collar is of a style from the mid 20th century - possibly even as early as the 1930's. It is designed to be easily removed and worn with different outfits - e.g. a dress, knitted top or blouse. Articles from Australian newspapers (particularly the Women's fashion pages) in the decades from the 1930's through to the 1950's often mentioned society ladies wearing "beaded collars" when describing their fashions and in the 1950's "beaded collars" were being made and imported from Japan however this particular collar appears to have been handmade. Unfortunately the maker of this collar is unknown.This item is an example of how women in the mid 20th century used their needlework skills to personalise and embellish an item of clothing (a collar) designed in a practical way to be able to be used with different items of clothing. Lady's beaded collar with a decorative floral design of flowers made with blue beads, outlined with bronze beads on a white beaded background. Bronze beads have also been used to "draw" leaf shapes and tendrils and outline a border all around the collar. Clothing. Ladies' collar. Net fabric, entirely sewn into 'pin-tucks' .5 cm deep in the high stand-up collar, and increasing to 7.5 cm at the lower edge of the jabot front. Opening at the back, the jabot is fastened by nine metal hooks, and hand-stitched loops. Collar has a tightly gathered double frill of the tulle fabric, at neck and is held up right by five 'covered' 'bones'. The lower edge of the front and back is edged with a 1.5 cm wide silk fabric frill. Centre lower edge of back has two 59 cm long silk ribbon ties. This ribbon is also attached to the lower edge of the jabot 58 cm and 60 cm long - presumably for the wearer to tie firmly in place. Neckline seam is re-inforced and neatened by an organdie type fabric, hand-stitched in place. Two fine elastic loops (now perished) one 52 cm, one 58 cm would once have helped to hold the jabot in place, with the arms passing through the loops, to keep the jabot in place. Detached sleeves. Net fabric, entirely sewn into .5 cm tucks. Reaching from the wrist to above the elbow. A double net frill edges the wrists, where a 6.5 cm opening, fastens with metal hooks and hand-stitched loops. A cotton tape, .5 cm wide neatens and re-infrces this seam, and a row of chain stitch, in silk thread embellishes the outer side of the seam. It would have been worn on special occasions rather than for everyday wear and would perhaps have been worn with a hat, gloves and high heels. This ensemble is retained as an example of a women’s outfit worn in the 1960s and 70s. It will be useful for display. This is a cotton wove dress and jacket in matching material. The pattern has bands width-ways and is in grey, brown and cream colouring. The dress is sleeveless with a rounded neckline and a zip at the back. The skirt section is slightly flared. Mrs Clare Roper wore this dress to a garden party at Buckingham Palace when she was invited there to represent the Lions Club.The Roper Family is one of the pioneering farming families of the Kiewa Valley. They built and used Ropers Hut on the High Plains. The dress worn by Clare Roper has historical significance as it represents the importance of the CWA which Claire Roper was involved with as President thus being invited to Buckingham Palace. Since we know it was Clare Ropers dress it is well provenances, is in reasonable condition and has very good interpretive capacity. This brown shirt waister dress has an 'A' line skirt with an inverted pleat on the lower half of both the front and back. The dress has a 'Peter Pan' collar, matching belt, pockets and short sleeves. Mt Beauty Workman's Club was formed in 1945, re-built and opened in 1954 and again in 1962 and 1968. The Bowls club was founded in 1970 and later was affiliated with the Victorian Ladies' Bowling Association (VLBA) and the North Eastern District LBA in 1974. There were strict rules regarding the Bowlers' uniform.The Mt Beauty Workman's Club was built by the SECV in 1945 to service their employees on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. As Mt Beauty grew it became the centre of activity for residents including the Bowling Club. This jacket which is possibly a bed jacket is believed to have been made by a schoolgirl Phoebe Lewell aged 15 in 1918 when she was attending St Michael's St Kilda and where she won the Form V Needlework Prize in 1918. It was purchased in the late 1990s by the donor who later moved to Emerald but, at the time, had a 2nd hand decoration shop in Camberwell when she purchased this as part of a group of garments which included bloomers, lace collars and cuffs, camisoles etc. - all of which have been donated to the Museum. The donor was informed at the time of purchase that the garments were over 100 years old. However, the date of this particular item is probably 1918.This lace lawn jacket is a lovely example of a decorative light jacket - possibly a bed jacket - worn in the early 20th century.Cream coloured lawn jacket, open front, lace trimmed with an open lace that ribbon could be passed through. Sleeves are half length and also trimmed with lace. The sailor-type collar is substantial and square shaped with satin stitched embroidery in the corners. The sleeves have bows in champagne coloured ribbon. Ladies black boned bodice of brocade fabric with floral pattern. Crossover front opening with internal centre fastened with thirteen metal hooks and eyes.Crossover section fastened on LHS with seven metal hooks and eyes covered by overlapping panel. Front of bodice is decorated with dense patterns of small black beads and black sequins. There are three vertical panels of beading. The centre panel is bordered with gathered ruffles of black ribbon (one cm wide). The overlapping edges of the side panels of the bodice are edged with gathered ruffles of black ribbon. The front panels of the bodice are lined with black cotton fabric. The back of the bodice is plain. The bodice has a straight edge at waist level with a cotton tape hem. The lower section of the bodice is boned with ten fabric cased bones distributed across the front and back, attached vertically from the waistband. A fabric belt (three cms wide) is attached at centre back four cm above the waist, inside the bodice. The left hand end of the belt has a metal buckle ( 3cmX2cm). The bodice has a 7cm stand-up collar fastened above the left shoulder with three metal hooks and eyes. The collar is densely decorated with small black beads and black sequins. At each shoulder is an epaulette decorated with beads and sequins and edged with one cm gathered ribbon ruffles. The long sleeves are shaped at the elbows with four cm beaded cuffs fastened with two metal hooks and eyes. There is a decorative two cm wide ribbon attached to the RHS of the waistband that extends across the front of the bodice to the LHS with a seventeen cm black ribbon bow attached. This is fastened to the RHS waistband with a metal hook and eye. There are two decorative pin tucks across the waistband at the back of the bodice. The bodice and sleeves are lined with brown cotton fabric. The 6.5cm stand-up collar is lined with dark green cotton fabric. The shoulders seams and eight of the bone casing are reinforced with black cotton fabric with green and pink checked edging. The long sleeves are gathered at the shoulders and shaped at the elbows.
