Display panel giving details re: the construction of the Dennys Lascelles concrete building (the Bow Truss building) adjacent to the Dennys Lascelles wool offices and store (now NWM) in 1911-13. The building was designed as a show floor for wool bales, thus the lack of columns and roof supports was significant in providing free space. It was designed by Mr E.G. Stone and construction was supervised by Laird and Buchan. It was demolished in the 1990s. The federation of the Australian Colonies was a turning point in Australian history and as such its achievement was celebrated in a range of ways. A major step towards achieving Federation was the referendum of July 1899 which saw five of the six Australian colonies vote in favor of Federation, with Western Australia later voting in favor in 1900. This certificate was part of the Centenary of Australian Federation Exabition in the basement of the Bendigo Post Office 2001.A framed Printed poster sized document certifying that Robert J Laird voted in a referendum of Victorian electors on 27th the July 1899 on the question of an Australian Federal Constitution. The body of the certificate text is surrounded on three sides by captioned photographic portraits of the Premiers of the six Australian Colonies. A British coat of arms is at the top of the certificate and at the bottom is an image of Parliament House in Melbourne, which includes a Dome, which was a projected feature of the building which was never actually added to the Victorian Parliament building. Across the top of the certificate: 'Australasian Federal Referendum July 1899'. In the centre: 'This is to certify that the question of an Australian Federal Constitution was submitted to the Electors of Victoria on the 27th day of July 1899 and that out of a Poll of 103,783 votes 152,653 were cast in favor of such Australasian Federal Constitution and further that Robert J Laird, voted at the said election'. Alex Mamot was a White Russian immigrant from China, sponsored by the Association of the Blind. Despite initial language barriers, his determination to succeed was an inspiration to those around him, who developed new ways of teaching which took into account his growing knowledge of English. In these images Alex Momot is showing with a Russian typewriter, being shown how to make stools by Mollie McDowell, feeling texture of a new suit held up by Matron Agar, being taught English by Carole Laird, learning the alphabet with H. Mackenzie and greeted at Brighton reception by Ms A. Mann. In addition, there are two typed notes without images: - The ship Tjiluwak, carrying Alexander Momot and other White Russian refugees approaching the wharf in Melbourne. - On the wharf, Alex 2nd from left, is greeted by Mrs W Christian (left) a blind Committee member of the Association for the Blind and Miss Constance Duncan of the Australian Council of Churches. At the right is Sergie Bankovski, also a blind White Russian who acted as interpreter. Miss Duncan also initiated the move which resulted in the Association for the Blind giving refuge to Sergie and his mother. Standing at the rear is Major General S.F.
