Photograph shows 12 men standing and sitting in rows facing the camera with a stone wall behind. One man, presumably the depot master, is dressed in a suit, tie and hat. The other 11 are in full tramway (MTOC) uniform with caps, two wearing the large pins used by conductors. As the MTOC only provided full uniforms to its traffic staff from 1901, this photograph can be dated between 1901 and 1916 when MTOC ceased, not 1895. The location was probably the Victoria Bridge car house (depot) in Victoria Street, North Richmond just west of the Yarra River, not a workshop. The usual flat fare for adults was three pennies, pronounced thrippence, not tuppence which was two pennies. There are many similar staff photos from this era which suggests they were initiated by MTOC. John was posted to 2/7 Advanced Workshops and saw active service in New Guinea. He again saw active service with the 2 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in Japan and Korea including action at the Battle of the Hook. He joined the CMF and served with the 8/14 Victorian Mounted Rifles until final discharge on 2/1/1960. The donor's grandparents, Matha and John Lishman, migrated to Australia from Hexham, Northumberland immediately after their marriage in 1887 and the shoe was sent by a family member to her grandmother, in anticipation of the arrival of their first child, my uncle Thomas. This hat pin stand would have been a common object in a woman’s bedroom in the past, especially about the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century when women wore large hats and they needed large pins to hold them in place. This hat pin holder has no known local provenance but it is kept as a memento of the past and will be useful for display.This is a silver-coloured metal stand with a round base with impressed patterns on the top and a central raised oval section containing a circular spike. This is an early example of an endotracheal tube invented by Ivan Magill. The shattered faces and jaws of wounded soldiers presented real difficulties for the administration of anaesthesia. Ivan Magill and Stanley Rowbotham developed endotracheal tubes for these procedures that were more efficient and practical than the earlier insufflation catheters.The attached safety pin was used to prevent the loss of the tube down the patient's nose.Brown rubber tubing with three pairs of holes at one end and a bevelled edge at the other for nasal endotracheal intubation. The donor's mother, Joy Newall owned these kilts. She lived on a wheat/sheep farm in the Wimmera where her husband also bred merino sheep. Set of five button badges produced by the Ballarat Tramway Museum for sale. Badges made with various coloured images of tram 31, with the words "Ballarat Vintage Tramway" around the edge of the badge and then pressed onto a metal back with a pin. Made by Patrick with their name and phone number stamped in to the centre of the rear of the badge. The spinning wheel was owned by Amy Penfold (donor Jan Dawson's mother) who presumably purchased the spinning wheel in the 1930s at an antiques auction. Amy lent the spinning wheel to her friends who spun (as Amy could not spin herself) In Yass, New South Wales during the early years of the Second World War. Amy's friends would spin lightly scoured semi greasy wool worked into yarn and knitted into particularly warm and water-resistant socks for sailors on minesweepers serving during the Second World War. Jan received the wheel in the early 1960s after her mother past away at which time the wheel was no longer operable. When Jan came to live in Melbourne, she sought the assistance of Spinners and Handweavers who assisted her in creating a new bobbin and restored the broken pieces of the wheel back into working order which we find it in today. With the loom are three bobbins. One bobbin is attached to the loom while of the two loose bobbins; one is a reproduction and one is an original. From these two the differences in construction can be observed. Large 12 spokes pinning wheel finished in dark tinted varnish on wood. Ornate upright posts.Additional two bobbins. One original and slightly damaged other is a reproduction and in excellent condition.
