Photograph - Cable tram conductor Fred Guildford, c1900

Historical information

The MTOC only provided full uniforms to its traffic staff from around 1900. Numerous professional photographs of individual staff and groups then appeared. In a time when the average person could not afford much elegant clothing, a stylish uniform impressed many, raising the profile of the tramway company and its well-dressed uniformed staff.

As well as the brass button on the conductor's tunic and vest, there are MTOC insignia on his cap and collar, an employee badge with his number (4) and depot (P = Prahran) and several large pins to hold the trip slips which a conductor clipped with a bell punch to record the fares collected.
