One man, presumably the depot master, is dressed in a suit, tie and hat. The other 11 are in full tramway (MTOC) uniform with caps, two wearing the large pins used by conductors. As the MTOC only provided full uniforms to its traffic staff from 1901, this photograph can be dated between 1901 and 1916 when MTOC ceased, not 1895. The location was probably the Victoria Bridge car house (depot) in Victoria Street, North Richmond just west of the Yarra River, not a workshop. The usual flat fare for adults was three pennies, pronounced thrippence, not tuppence which was two pennies. There are many similar staff photos from this era which suggests they were initiated by MTOC. Yields information about Brunswick cable tram employees Black and white newsprint photograph with notes below. Appears to be a more recent compilation using the original photograph with added contemporary and sometimes inaccurate text.Notes read: "These are nine gripmen, two conductors and the depot-master in this remarkable old shot" "Melbourne cable trammies in 1895 [sic]. He is preparing to open an exterior door into a brick building. The caption below indicates he is about to deposit his takings and trip slips. It was the practice of MTOC that each time a return trip was completed, the conductor entered the Receiver's Office at the car house (usually at the suburban terminus) to pay-in. The coins were held in the conductor's jacket pockets, which may account for the bulge in his right pocket. He stands under a canopy supported by poles with a partial curtain at the rear along with his overcoat. The canopy was located on the footpath on the southeast corner of the intersection of Collins and Swanston Streets. This was the busiest cable tramway intersection in Melbourne and one of the busiest for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The tram tracks crossed each other at right angles with no curved tracks to permit turns. The signalman's job was twofold: to directed which trams had right of way by use of mechanical signals and to depress the Collins Street cable so that the upward incline did not cause the cable to rise out of the slot onto the roadway. The depression gear was located under both Collins Street tracks adjacent to the Town Hall and was only released momentarily to allow a Collins Street tram to pass over it. This was a demanding job requiring constant vigilance: working with the policeman controlling the intersection, trams approaching from four directions, horse and motor traffic and pedestrians. The signalman's rules provided a specific order of steps each time the signals and depression gear were reset, which occurred many times per hour. He was also authorised to stop trams with the use of his whistle and a red hand lamp and to report gripmen who disobey his directions. Traffic lights were gradually introduced to Melbourne from 1928 after cable trams were replaced in Swanston Street and just before they were replaced in Collins Street. This is a photograph taken of a newsprint photograph from an unnamed newspaper. Yields information about signalman's work. Black and white photograph with note below photograph. Has Victoria Bridge & Cemetery written on the side of the tram. 2nd copy added with different crop. Photo from the Collection of the Department of Infrastructure now with the Public Records Office - image number H1. Note: this photo is now out of copyright and was not an original VR photograph, but one copied from another source and collected as their Heritage series. From an email from Rod Atkins 29/7/2019: This Stevenson six widow saloon horse tram No 46 is fairly standard. The horse cars did not have wheel skirts like the cable trams 6 and 8 window cars. Sitting at the terminus in High Street at Parkhill Road at the gates of the Boroondara General Cemetery ready for its return trip to Richmond. The tram is being run one man. Note the location of gates, pay as you enter the front step. The driver has a conductors bag around his neck and waist. No conductor present in the photo. His uniform is classic Company issue. He is wearing a Tunic and vest! And early issue cap with a white band. Date: around circa 1900 as the clock tower, brick wall and cast iron fence are all in place and the car number is faded out. I have seen a photo of a tram there with no clock tower from around the opening of the line. Yields information about the Kew Horse tram and its tramcars.Black and white photograph with source notes on rear.Has part of the Department of Infrastructure copy right stamp on rear and number in ink on rear and "1-5"trams, tramways, horse trams, kew, mto co, cemetery, uniforms -
