Photograph of 36 female administrative staff of the cable tram company (MT&OC), taken in an upper room of the company's head office at 669-675 Bourke Street, Melbourne. From the company's beginning, very few females were employed. The rapid growth in female employees may have coincided with the introduction of typewriters into Melbourne offices after 1900.
