This uniform belonged to Marion Elaine Caffrey, nee Bullock (1920-1993). Marion was born and lived in Begonia Road, Gardenvale and attended Star of the Sea College with her younger twin sisters, Hilary and Margaret Bullock. Their family had been living in the district since 1892 when their grandfather, James Stewart, settled first at Brighton Beach before building a new home in Gardenia Road, Gardenvale in 1910. On leaving school, Marion took a job with the T&G Insurance Company in Collins Street. However, as the threat of invasion by Japan loomed closer following the bombing of Pearl Harbour and the fall of Singapore, in 1943 she volunteered to join Australia's war effort as part of the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS). She initially trained as a coder at HMAS Cerberus, followed by a posting to HMAS Magnetic in Townsville. By the time Marion arrived in Townsville in 1944 it was very much a garrison town, inhabited largely by Australian and American servicemen. Whereas in Melbourne the war in the Pacific may have felt somewhat distant, in Townsville it was very immediate. Though the town was never subjected to the heavy bombardments of Darwin, a series of small air strikes in July 1942 had made the fear of air raids quite real. The naval base HMAS Magnetic was responsible for communications, Port Examination Services and servicing of Allied warships. Marion worked as a coder, encoding outgoing transmissions and decoding incoming ones either manually or using a Typex cipher machine. In 1945, she completed additional training to attain the rank of Leading Coder. Her keenness for the work is evident in a note on her service record: although no WRANS women were ever sent to active warzones, Marion volunteered for overseas service. Marion later recalled her time with the WRANS as one of the happiest and most personally fulfilling times of her life. Like many Australian women, she embraced the opportunity to serve her country and take on roles traditionally reserved for men. She completed her three years' service at HMAS Harman in Canberra where she was de-mobbed in 1946. Afterwards, she secured a job with Metro Goldwyn Mayer, where she worked until her marriage to Hugh Caffrey in 1947.Second World War WRANS uniform consisting of a dark navy blue serge blazer (.1), skirt (.2) and hat (.3). The blazer features six buttons. The left arm features a black patch embroidered with a red anchor wrapped in a length of rope (a fouled anchor) with a single red chevron beneath, denoting the rank of Leading Wran (equivalent to Leading Seaman). The right arm features a black patch embroidered with red crossed flags over the letter 'C'. The pencil skirt is lined and fastens at the side with a button and snap fastenings. The navy felt hat features a round brim and a black ribbon band machine embroidered in gold with the words "H.M.A.S. HARMAN".Maker's label in collar of blazer reads "N491 / 1942 / SIZE [indistinct] / MADE IN AUSTRALIA" The label features a pen inscription, "BULLOCK". Size label in back of skirt: "2". Label inside the hat: "N18 / 1944 Size 20½ / MADE IN AUSTRALIA"1940s, marion elaine bullock, marion elaine caffrey, second world war, military uniform, wrans, women's royal australian naval service

This historical photograph captures the Foot Police and Water Police stationed at Williamstown, after 1886. The officers in the back row wearing high white/light-colored custodian helmets represent the Foot Police (Land), while the members seated and standing in the lower rows wearing dark uniforms and caps or flat-brimmed hats represent the Water Police (Sea). Thomas Scott Band came out to Victoria as a second mate on the ship Adair in 1853. In the following year he joined the water police and was stationed at Geelong for a number of years, when he transferred to the Williamstown water police. He retired as a senior constable in 1887 after serving 33 years' service. He died aged 75 in January 1907. (Source: Williamstown Chronicle 19 January 1907) Constable Bolger had been a member of the Royal Irish constabulary and served two years arriving in the colony with the Permanent Artillery. He almost served 30 years service in the police force and died of illness during September 1900 aged 56. (Source: Williamstown Chronicle 15 September 1900) The handwritten text explicitly highlights Thomas R. Hazle (standing in the center row with a dark hat). Hazle was formerly a leading seaman on H.M.S. Nelson, stationed in Victoria, and left the navy in 1886, when he joined the water police and was stationed at Williamstown and South Wharf. He was a senior-constable when he retired during 1911. He died aged 86 on the 15th September 1931. (source: Williamstown Chronicle 19 September 1931) Sergeant James Whitcher gave up sea faring life to join the water police in 1852. He was promoted to the rank of senior-constable in 1881, and to sergeant in 1883, succeeding Sergeant Daly in charge of the station a year afterwards. He retired on 30 June 1892 and died in May 1893. (Source: Williamstown Advertiser Sat 20 May 1893) John Tuckey was born in Tipperary Ireland in 1827 and joined the Victorian Police Force in 1853. He rose to the position of Constable and retired after 29 years of service. He died in 1906, aged 79. (Source: Williamstown Chronicle 12 May 1906). A group of eleven dancers dressed in diaphanous gowns surround Cerberus mascot, Bruce of Woodside, and his sailor handler. Also visible is a large commemorative bell inscribed thus: "Bell presented HMAS Melbourne by the Chairman & Court of Directors of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in commemoration of the invaluable services rendered by the SS "TAFF", St Lucia April 1916" “Bruce of Woodside” and The Society Girls September 1934: During a break in rehearsals for the Naval Pageant at HMAS Cerberus Flinders Naval Depot, King Neptune’s sea nymphs were photographed in their diaphanous sea-green draperies. The sea nymphs were a “who’s who” of Melbourne’s high society young women who often featured in Table Talk, a weekly social magazine with articles about local and overseas notables, their fashions, social engagements and relationships. Pet HMAS Cerberus bulldog mascot “Bruce of Woodside”, accompanied by his sailor handler, led naval parades and events wearing a Cerberus sailor hat, and achieved the rank of three badge Petty Officer. Every day at three bells (13:00 hours), Bruce ate a pound and half of raw steak and two raw eggs. Later, Bruce was demoted to Leading Seaman for “eating a goldfish out of the fish pond at the captain’s residence”. Bruce was demoted again for urinating on the wheels of the Captain’s car. On 28 July 1935, when Bruce collapsed and died of a chill after his customary swim, the papers declared it “to the sorrow of every man in the depot”. Featured in "Newsworthy : Melbourne in photographs 1933-1936" exhibition held at East Melbourne Library from October to December 2023. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: The names of the sea nymphs: Miss Maisie Cooper, Miss Lorna Dawson, Mrs W. Catanach, Mrs Wallace Smith, Misses Valerie Wallace Smith, Beth Paxton, Elizabeth Darling, Barbara and Joyce Hayden Smith, Alison Mein, Valerie Pratt, Shirley Pratt, Brenda Payne, Elaine Knox-Knight, Betty Matear, Joan Ramsay, Ann Outhwaite [daughter of artist Ida Rentoul Outhwaite], Iris Connolly, Carmen Burridge, Dora Tait. The Naval Pageant, held at the Melbourne Show Ground, 31 October - 3 November 1934, was arranged as part of the Navy's contribution to the Victorian Centenary Celebrations. It was produced and acted by officers and men from the Navy Office, Flinders Naval Depot, H.M.A.S. Squadron, R.A.N.R. Depot, Williamstown, and R.A.N.R. Depot, Port Melbourne. Included were songs and marches, episodes from the life of Captain Cook, drill in honour of Nelson, Drake, Neptune's Court, and episodes from 1914. This was essentially family entertainment - advertisements in the souvenir programme are for ice creams, chocolates and engagement rings. A note about the episode in Cook's life in Tahiti reads 'The dresses worn by Tahitian dancing girls at this period were not considered suitable for the pageant, and historical accuracy has been sacrificed for attractiveness in choosing the raffia skirts of Hawaii.'
