Photograph of a Legacy Demonstration at the Melbourne Town Hall. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. A church service for Legacy widows at St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The church used for the service varies, this is believed to be St Paul's. The service is followed by a pilgrimage to the Shrine for a service and also a social gathering of a lunch together. The photos show Legatee Graham Riches holding the Legacy flag as part of the procession into the church. An example of a Melbourne Ladies Intermediate Legacy Club Badge that was stitched onto clothes. ILC was formed from junior legatees who had become too old for the usual junior legatee activities. It was most active from the 1930s to 1950s. This badge came from a donation of material from a former Junior Legatee, Valma Hutchinson (nee Wigg). She was involved with the Ladies ILC. The badge of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood and Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann. Also donated were girls' uniform, a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a junior legatee certificate and a $100 Legacy badge. Photograph of a building on Legatee Stan Savige's property. It is labelled as Legacy Camp, Somers. This appears to be the original camp buildings established by Legacy in the 1930s. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring East, close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. A newspaper article promoting Legacy Week in The Sun on 10 September 1960. The story about the donation of a special bottle of King's Ale to Legacy that was to be auctioned to raise money for Legacy Week in 1960. In 1902 a special brew of ale was made by King Edward VII. In 1960 a bottle of the ale turned up in Melbourne and was donated to Legacy by Mr A W Taylor of 'Old Tin Shed' a motor accessories firm. The photo shows Mr A W Taylor and Legatee George Cowan. A similar photo was taken by The Age. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings.
