Photocopy of an article written by Ian Anderson (past president of Melbourne Legacy) for the Victorian Historical Magazine, 149th issue, August 1967, which was taken from his address to the Society on Tuesday 23 May 1967. It describes the founding of Legacy and the role of founding legatees. It summarises the work Legacy was doing with finding work for returned servicemen, and then focusing more on looking after the needs of war widows and their children. The magazine is available at the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne, but has not yet been digitised to read on line. A photocopy of an article in the 'Victorian Historical Magazine', 149th Issue August 1967. It was an account of a speech by Legatee Ian Anderson to the Historical Society on 23 May 1967. Legatee Anderson was president of Melbourne Legacy Club in 1964. This is a very good quality account of details of Legacy up to the 1960s. The article outlines the key figures and events in the creation of Legacy in 1923. He mentions 8 of the members at the founding meeting in September 1923 were from the 24th Battalion. The name 'Legacy' was suggested by L/ Frank Selleck. Also the first two years of Legacy focused on the rehabilitation of returned servicemen and finding them work. It was L/ Frank Doolan that proposed the 'real field for the movement's work lay in the care, guidance and encouragement of the families of those comrades who, through death, were themselves no longer there to give those benefits, and that as the children of deceased ex-servicemen were growing up, the cases were increasing in which some deputy was needed to take up among them the work for their deceased fathers, and to act virtually as a guardian or sponsor with the help and advice our dead comrade would have given.' It mentions the Central Liaison Committee, the Co-ordinating Council, the dates of the formation of other clubs, the Code of Legacy, the residences, the annual demonstrations, also the camps and classes provided for children. He quotes L/ Stan Savige in a speech to the Annual Conference in 1950 and also part of the speech given to farewell L/ Savige after his death. The notation H51 in blue pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Guests included Sir William Deane, Governor General of Australia, and the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Councillor Ivan Deveson. 1998 Melbourne Legacy President Tom Bannister hosted the proceedings, which were organised by past President, Legatee D.J. This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material. Legacy invited the leading guitarists, Phil and Tony Emmanuel to be Personality of the Year in 1995. They helped to promote Legacy, especially during Badge Week (see 00838). They were chosen as their father had served in the Air Force in New Guinea. When he died Legacy helped support their mother and her 6 children. They were releasing a new album in 1995, 'Terra Firma' and Legacy was given a special mention at each concert in Australia. Their album also featured a song called "The Last Post" which was dedicated to the men and women who gave their lives in times of war to keep Australia free. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). A certificate presented as an anniversary gift to Melbourne Legacy, recognising 50 years as commemorated on a postage stamp. Australia Post issued this postage stamp in 1973, on the 50th anniversary of the founding of Melbourne Legacy, September 1923. The stamp was produced in recognition of the outstanding work that Legacy has done in helping war widows and their families. The design of children playing within the silhouette of a hand, was done by George Hamori, an Australian graphic design artist (born 1918).The stamp was a reminder to all the people of Australia of the helping hand of kindness of Legacy, and the generosity of the people of Australia who have donated to fund the work that Legacy does.Pink and blue cardboard certificate with four 7c stamps affixed in top left corner. Australia Post issued a stamp featuring the Legacy Torch. It will be in general circulation as well as available as commemorative packs and first day covers. The stamp design presents the iconic branding of Legacy Australia and echoes the colours of the Australian flag. The torch design prominently placed in the stamp represents the undying flame of service and sacrifice, the foundation of Legacy’s existence. The body of the torch is presented in a gold colour, signifying generosity and compassion. In its wreath of laurel, with its points inverted in remembrance, is the guerdon of honour, to represent those who gave their lives for their country.
