This badge was given to William Clarence Busse when he became a lifetime member of the Chiltern Football Club. Football became popualr in Chiltern during the 1860s, with the local team becoming a key part of the creation of a formal competition for the Ovens and Murray region, which came about in 1893. The Chiltern team also participated in the founding of the Chiltern and District Football Association in 1912, where they won their first premiership in 1914. In 1954, the team played in a Grand Final against Greta that had a 43 minute long final quarter. Chiltern was ahead when the fourth quarter should have ended, but the timer did not go off and the game went into overtime, allowing Greta to snatch the win and set in place a decades-long rivalry. Today, the team continues to compete under the nickname the 'Swans' in the Tallangatta and District Football League. Wilfred Clarence Busse was born in Chiltern in 1898. He completed his education at Wesley College in Melbourne then studied law at the University of Melbourne, before becoming a barrister. During his career, he often worked in the chambers of Judge Bernard Cussen (1859-1933) of the Supreme Court. Cussen was popular as a judge and lawyer, known for being just and precise and for completing through statutory consolidation in his spare time. Beyond his career as a lawyer, Busse wrote historical fiction inspired by his life in Chiltern, these included "The Blue Beyond; A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia" and "The Golden Plague: A Romance of the Early Fifties," which won the T.E.Role gold medal for the best historical novel in 1930 and went on to become a best seller. He was a member of the Chiltern Athenaeum until his death in 1960. This object is significant for its link to W.C. Busse, a barrister and author born in Chiltern, and as memorabilia of the Chiltern Football Club. Vida Horn was the founding librarian at St Kilda Library. She helped plan the library from 1970 and worked there from its establishment in 1973 until her retirement in 1987. She was a lifetime member of the St Kilda Historical Society and founding member of the St Kilda Festival Committee and Garden Festival Committee. This heritage site encompasses the original stone cottage, associated replicated outbuildings and a local history museum, surrounded by 2.25 hectares of gardens and bushland, and adjacent to Yarran Dheran bushland park. Lifetime member Doug Orford sold his house in Napoleon Street November 2023 and has moved into a care faciity. As an initial means to determining this, a number of biographies devoted to the man's lifetime achievements have been consulted. Some two of these were found to contain rather brief references to his involvement at Warrandyte. In the 1992 booklet entitled "David Mitchell a Forfar Man" written by a Mitchell family member, viz., Pamela, Lady Vestey, of Coombe Cottage, there is included a passge which commences "Another of David Mitchell's early interests was gold mining". This is appended by the bald statement "In 1870 he formed the Evelyn Tunnel Gold-Mining Company with a capital of £16,000." The other account of a Mitchell involvement with an unnamed Warrandyte company is contained in Joan Campbell's 1974 biographical article entitled, "Mitchell, David (1829- 1916) builder, contractor and businessman, etc.", in Volume 5 of the "Australian Dictionary of Biogaraphy". Campbell mentions that "In 1890 (sic) Mitchell formed a company to mine a channel and tunnel on the Yarra River at Pound Bend, Warrandyte," i.e., at a period some 18 or so years after it is known that the Evelyn Tunnel Gold-Mining Company had actually ceased operations. She then continues with the bizarre statement that "he employed gangs of Chinese to work three miles of river bed for gold". Neither of these respective excerpts indicate evidence of having been directly referenced from a legitimate original source, from which either author's contained comments might be authenticated. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders in the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Harold Greenwood Thomas was one of a group of students who founded the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA). They all had attended the first Industrial Safety and Accident Prevention Course conducted by Melbourne Technical College in 1948. Due to his long service to safety and prevention there is the Harold Greenwood Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award. This is the most prestigious award by the Institute and may be issued to a person who has demonstrated a combination of long term outstanding and influential contribution to the profession in a specific or generalist area of Occupational Health and Safety and Work Health and Safety, where there work has made a major impact on outcomes in Australian workplaces. Amy Neville Brown (1882-1974) was a longlife member of the Mission to Seafarers ladies' Committees: 1910 - Amy is first mentioned in our records as LHLG branch secretary for Elsternwick. (from diaries written by her and her sister Beatrice during 1909-1913 and held at the Glen Eira Historical Society, Amy tells she attends “kirk” with Miss Godfrey about once a month and each time they go to the “Institute” afterwards.) 1918 - 1922 sees Amy as “Schools secretary” LHLG. 1933 - Miss A N Brown becomes Honorary Secretary of the LHLG. 1946 – LHLG becomes “Harbour Lights Guild”. 1949 – Dora Simpson is president of HLG & Amy Brown is Honorary Secretary. 1957 – Amy retires as Honorary Secretary of the HLG. Other interests: 1933 - Amy founded the Victorian Aboriginal Group along with Valentine Alexa Leeper (1900-2001). She acted as Hon. Sec. to the VAG for 40 years until its winding up in 1971 8 boxes of papers related to their activities are held at the SLV under Amy’s name (with Val Leeper). 1950 - Amy was a member of the YWCA 1963 – she was president of the Agnes Benson Auxiliary of the YWCA. None of 4 sisters married, they lived all their lives in Elsternwick. Edward Byam Brown was an academic at Melbourne University rising to become Ass. Prof. of Electrical Engineering by the 1950s. He married Vera Scantlebury in 1926 – they had 2 children. Amy’s maternal grandparents were Edward Byam Wight and Catherine Philpott. Both arrived in Melbourne in the early 1840s. Edward Wight is included on Thomas Chuck’s collage of early Victorian pioneers. Anne Jackson has written a short biography of Catherine’s brother, William Philpott, which includes a paragraph on Edward Wight. Catherine’s youngest son, Neville Wight, became a solicitor living at Woodend. He married Grace Rutherford – Mrs Neville Wight was a member of our Executive Committee from 1929 to 1933. Neville Wight’s obituary states that “he served his articles with … the firm of Moule & Seddon”. The principal of this firm was W H Moule, well known judge and cricketer. His son, also W H Moule, was Honorary Secretary of MtSV Executive Committee for 20 years until his retirement in 1958. was a member of the Harbour Lights Guild ( Honorary General Secretary in the 30s) then the Flying Angel League. She passed away in September 1974. A protege and friend of the Godfreys and Ina Higgins she actively assisted in setting up school branches of LHLG and eventually became a leading member in the 1930s.The window made by Tony Hall along with this plaque were dedicated in 1976. Mr John P. Adam was a member of the Kew Presbyterian Church. He was born in Scotland and came to Australia at the age of 13 when his father was appointed Professor of Divinity at Ormond College. John Adam studied law and commenced practice in 1924. He served on the Council of the Law Institute of Victoria and was President in 1949. He gave a lifetime of service to the Presbyterian Church of Victoria and Australia. He was law agent of the Victorian Church for 20 years and was foundation Convenor of the Donald Cameron Homes Committee for elderly people. He was a member of the Council of Presbyterian Ladies' College for 20 years and Chairman from 1958 to 1965. He was also a member of the Ormond College Council. He was an active member of the Kew Presbyterian Church , serving on the Board of Management and Session for 47 years. Ticket was used in 1931 and kept in storage by a member of the Edina's crew. The SS Edina was the most famous steamer in Australia and underwent a number of changes and refits during its lifetime. It had an unchallenged record of strandings and collisions with other vessels and of escaping serious damage itself. The vessels City of Melbourne, Courier, Manawatu, Excelsior (twice), Hovell, Batman, all suffered. When Edina was retired in 1938 it was the world's oldest working steamer and had travelled more than 1 million km. She was finally broken up by George Seelf on the banks of the Maribyrnong in 1957.The SS Edina was an iconic and affectionately regarded part of Port Phillips maritime history and culture. It is historically significant for being internationally famous as the worlds oldest working screw steamship between 1912 and 1938. Its career was varied and interesting and it is considered significant for its involvement in the Crimean War, US Civil War, NZ gold rushes, and locally for its career as a western district steamship and Bay steamer. Born in Bendigo and trained as a nurse in the 1950s, Sonia Jill O’Brien devoted a lifetime to social and environmental issues at both the state and local level. From her work in the 1960s with the Family Planning Association of Victoria, of which she was a founding member, through to the 1990s as a member of the Ethics Committee of the Department of Health, she supported efforts to improve women’s health and reproductive rights. At the local level she was most active on committees that worked to save the natural and built environment. The Power-line Action Group, the Studley Park Conservation Society, and the Yarra Bend Park Trust all benefitted from her indefatigable endeavours as well her vision. In 1980, Jill O’Brien successfully stood for the Kew City Council and served as Mayor in 1983 and 1984. With an eye to preserving the past as well as guarding the future, she had the Mayoral robes restored and in 1980 and 1981 was president of the Kew Historical Society. The preservation and restoration of Villa Alba in Walmer Street owes much to her determined efforts throughout the 1980s. On Council, she chaired a number of committees involved in the saving of the Kew River Parklands from the proposed transmission line of the SEC. "Glenara' was the home of Alistair Clark who lived at Bulla which is situated about 20 kms NW of Melbourne in the Deep Creek valley. He was born there in 1864 and lived there throughout his lifetime until his death in 1949. His father established the property during the mid-nineteenth century. Alister Clark was a rose grower and created the very popular 'Lorraine Lea 'rose along with other famous species. A rose garden has been established in the township of Bulla in his memory. He was also an active member of the Victorian Racing Club. The original photograph was published in the Melbourne 'Herald' on 20 August 1952 on page 5.Alistair Clark was a prominent rose grower and developed many rose species which were suitable for Victorian conditions. The homestead is a good example of Victorian architecture built in Victoria in the latter years of the nineteenth century. Plaque commemorating the opening of the Dickinson Centre, named in honour of Harold and Mercy Dickinson, both totally blind since childhood, who never let challenges stand in their way. Mercy was the first woman who was blind to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Queensland, and received her Masters Degree in the Education of Blind People with Additional Handicaps in New York, and an Honorary Doctorate for Education from the University of Queensland in 1994. Mercy and Harold established the Queensland Training and Placement Centre for the Blind, the first establishment of its kind in Queensland. Harold, who was a prolific writer, was appointed the Director and Mercy was the first volunteer at the Centre. Together they gave a lifetime of dedication and commitment ensuring that people who were blind or had low vision had the same opportunities as those with sight. The Centre later merged with other organisations and in 2006 became part of Vision Australia. He later diversified into other grains and sheep (wool and meat). He took a enthusiastic interest in agricultural engineering and was keen to introduce innovative ideas that improved the productivity of farms and farming practices. In the mid 1950 he conducted trials during harvest on the family property of the original mechanical hay fork built on a British Bedford truck by Bill Gillespie. This design was further refined in collaboration with the Gillespie brothers and resulted in the construction the hydraulically operated tractor mounted hay fork. The innovative design of the hay fork created interest from far and wide and was quickly taken up by farmers because it significantly reduced hand labouring of loading sheaves of hay with a pitch fork. His father established chaff mills in Melton, Rockbank, Parwan, Diggers Rest in the first decade of 1900 and in 1915 went into partnership with JR Schutt to establish the Schutt & Barrie Pty. Ltd. Alan Holt was keenly interested in the history of Surrey Hills. He worked in the Lands Department and drew up maps of the area based on research he conducted there in his spare time and after retirement. He also compiled a survey of owners / occupants of all Surrey Hills listings from Sands & MacDougall directories at 10 year intervals. These are meticulously entered into hand-written ledgers. All his work is also entered on to index cards. With a lifetime's knowledge of local history and research techniques, Alan found himself after retirement, in constant demand as an amateur historian working for the Box Hill Historical Society and the History Group of the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. When the Surrey Hills Historical Society was formed, Alan and Edna became its first and only Life Members. Alan began work in the Department of Crown Lands and Survey. In the 1950s-60s he moved to the Premier's Department where he assisted with the planning for the Queen's 1954 visit. He was promoted to Permanent Head of the Lands Department until retirement in 1972. He was associated with the Surrey Hills Uniting Church all his life. Hardy wrote numerous works of fiction and non-fiction in his lifetime. His most famous work is the 1950 novel, 'Power Without Glory'. A short story collection titled 'Legends from Benson's Valley, published in 1963 is loosely based upon his early lifetime memories of living in Bacchus Marsh during the 1930s. Hardy was was an active member of the Communist Party of Australia for most of his life. He tried unsuccessfully on two occasions to be elected to the Federal Parliament as a representative of the Communist party. Hardy died in North Carlton, Melbourne in 1994 aged 76. This work is a collection of critical essays about Hardy's work and life by several different writers and critics. This is a photograph of the Raftopoulos-Rodopoulos family members who attended the function in honour of the late Loula Rodopoulos (nee Raftopoulos). Loula Rodopoulos was one of the first fully qualified social workers from an 'ethnic' background and was instrumental in the establishment of the Womens’ Trust, which established a sub fund in her name to sponsor young women writers and to help women recovering from mental health problems. Both areas were of very great interest to Loula during her lifetime. Loula's and Spearos' parents were Peter (Panoyiannis) and Evgenia Raftopoulos. Peter migrated from Ithaca in the 1930s and was secretary of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society 1938-1949 and 1953. Evgenia was born in Melbourne in 1923, the daughter of Katina Dracoulis and Spearos Raftopulos (Balatsikos) who were married in Melbourne 1921. The event was held at Macrobertson Girls High School where Loula was a student.
