Norma Bull is an Australian painter who is most famous for her paintings and sketches made during World War II in Britain as an official war artist. Bull was a finalist in the Archibald prize twice, in 1952 and 1953. These tokens were used at Falls Creek throughout the 1970s to ride on the chair lifts. The tokens were donated by Veikko Tanner. He owned and operated Karelia Lodge at Falls Creek during the 1970s. At that time Veikko was also area manager for the ski resort. He also worked as a "powder monkey" during the blasting of the ski runs.These tokens are significant because they represent a stage in the progression of chair lifts and technical developments at Falls Creek.2 tokens for use on the Ski Lifts at Falls Creek. This photo is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. It is an image of the first Chair Lift built in Australia by Bob Hymans. This was a single chair lift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. During 1978 strips of tickets were used on the Nursery and Link lifts at Falls Creek. For each ride a ticket was torn off by the operator at the bottom of the lift. Ski lift tickets have changed often during the years from single lift coins, single tickets, day tickets, electronic tickets. The names and existence of lifts has also changed over time.In 1978 ski lift tickets were sold as a strip of 7 and operators were employed on each lift to collect them. Falls Creek is a major ski resort in Victoria and Australia. This strip has been superseded by other forms of 'tickets' sold at Falls Creek. This ticket also names 2 of the lifts which operated in 1978. Seven ski lift tickets attached as a strip to a butt. They are for the Nursery lift or the Link Lift at Falls Creek for the 1978 season. This cigarette or pipe lighter was in use in the mid 1900's when the majority of users were men. Ladies did smoke but mainly not in "public" The activity was still regarded as a male activity. Middle to Upper "Class" of women nearly always had a gentleman "at hand" that would "light up" her cigarette. This was seen as a "social" activity only but later in the mid 1900's onward it was quite acceptable for both sexes to "smoke" at anytime.This type of lighter was male orientated due to the degree of lighting the flint with the horizontal movement required a strong thumb action across the lighting wheel. It is significant to rural areas such as the Kiewa Valley as the majority of men (especially during and after World War II) regarded smoking as a way to ease off the "tension" of hard work. The socio-economics of the Australian work place changed after the emancipation of women in the "workforce" after the World War II depleted the male workforce for the duration of the War and changed the Australian ethics of women in all aspects of both city and rural working "so called" male only occupations.This Polo Swift lift arm cigarette/pipe lighter has a chrome plated shell and is fueled by petrol. He continued in this role until 1990 when he was offered the position of Managing Director at Thredbo. During his period as General Manager major projects carried out at Falls Creek were:- the construction of Halleys Comet Chairlift, Slalom Street Plaza development, the introduction of snowmaking, Cloud 9 Restaurant, the construction of the Scott Chair and the Village Bowl.
