This monument is in recognition of the heroic rescue efforts of Mr. John Silvey and Mr. William Sandford who was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society. Mr. Silvey received the society's "Clarke" Silver Medal for the most outstanding case of bravery for that year.
