The plaque is in memory of a tragic accident in February 1933 in which two miners died and another two men attempted a brave but unsuccessful rescue.

Locomotive Extended Mine: In this mine on 14. 2. 33 Arthur Dunstan and Albert Berger died from the inhalation of carbon monoxide gas. This monument is in recognition of the heroic rescue efforts of Mr. John Silvey and Mr. William Sandford who was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society. Mr. Silvey received the society's "Clarke" Silver Medal for the most outstanding case of bravery for that year. Erected by the Friends of the Union Jack Reserve 14.2.97
