Thirteen letters Elizabeth Holmes received on the death of her father from the Nuns at Loreto Abbey in Ballarat. Donated by founder, Mother Gonzaga Barry's, brother, John Barry, to Loreto's Ballarat school, Mary's Mount, in 1887. Brought back by Mother Gonzaga on her return from Europe in 1887. Maintained by Captain Henry Evans Baker, Superintendent of the Oddie Observatory, Mount Pleasant Ballarat, who subsequently made the students a telescope. A certificate issued in 1924. Loreto or Mary's Mount, now Loreto College was the first Loreto school in Australia, established in 1875 by Mother Mary Gonzaga Barry and companions at the invitation of Ballarat's Bishop O'Connor to meet the growing educational needs of girls. The Taffe family and their relatives supported the school and several members of the wider family entered the order over the years.
