Sidney and Ivy-Jane Browne purchased the Lower Plenty ‘Golf Club’ Hotel in 1940. They owned it until 1943. Their daughter, Irene Stella, was born in Eltham in July 1923 and would have been between 17 and 20 years of age at the time this photograph was taken. Ivy-Jane (nee Williams) was born in Eltham in December 1899 and was the sister of George Alfred Williams who is commemorated on the WWI plaque at the back of St. Margaret’s church, Eltham, and whose name is also listed on the Cenotaph in front of the Eltham War Memorial in Main Road, Eltham. Irene Browne married Leslie Allan Walker in 1945 and following his death in 1958 she married Charles William Smith. She died in 2008 and is buried in Omeo Cemetery along with her husband, Charles Smith. Her granddaughter, Veronica Gunn, advises a few years earlier, Irene’s son took her to the hotel and spoke with the then owner who showed Irene the photo, which she confirmed was of herself. Lower Plenty Hotel. This photograph shows the original Plenty Bridge hotel with Lower Plenty bridge in the foreground. Newly constructed single span bridge on Main Road (now Lower Plenty Road) crossing the Plenty River at Lower Plenty. Site of Heidelberg Golf Club and Lower Plenty Hotel in the background. This was the boundary between the Shire of Eltham and the City of Heidelberg.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book ,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' View looking west across the Eltham-Yarra Glen Road approaching the Lower Plenty Bridge near turn-off for the Golf Club Hotel. Present-day Lower Plenty Road follows a revised alignment across a new bridge. The former bridge is now part of the Plenty River Trail and Edward Willis Court now follows this section of the original Eltham-Yarra Glen Road.. The Golf Club Hotel is gone and a new Lower Plenty Hotel was built slightly further up the hill.Record of various Shire of Eltham infrastructure works undertaken during the period of 1952-1962 involving bridge and road reconstruction projects, sometimes with Eltham Shire Council Project Reference numbers quoted. It was during this period that a number of significant improvements were made to roads and new bridges constructed within the shire that remain in place as of present day (2022).
